    bouncing speedo

    I did a search and didn't find anything on this. I can't believe I'm the first to have a speedometer that bounces (the needle swerves wildly on the dial between the 40mph mark and 80 mph mark once I'm going over 50 mph) could it be a simple stretched cable?

    I've heard this happens when the cable needs lube. Each of my 550's bounces...the tach lasts a lot longer then the speedo, but on long runs the tach will start bouncing.

    I've never tried lubing my cables, but I guess I should.

        Yep, could be that easy. Probably some dirt in the cable casing too. You can rinse it out with kerosene or mineral spirits. Just pull the cable out of the casing by the front wheel end and clean it up, oil it and voila!

          3 possibilities cable- clean & lube, speedo adapter- remove it from the wheel, un screw the insert (inside) where the cable screws into, soak it in some solvent, spray some grease into the housing. You can remove the speedo and turn it upside down and fill the cable adapter with light oil & let it soak in. Thats about all that can be done short of cutting the speedo apart

            Ive just sent my speedo away to be refurbished.

            I oiled the cable etc, then stuck in a new cable, then a mate said "think about it matey, it is a 77 model bike, has 70000 Km on the clock, and when things wear they dont function properly"

            The quote was for AU$100 to refurbish, calibrate and also redo the dial and needle too

            Well worth it!

            Ps I sent it to OTTO instruments in Brisbane Australia, they are an Instrument repairer that specialises in vehicle instruments.
