Hose that ran to airbox from engine

    Hose that ran to airbox from engine

    I knocked out the airbox on my 82gs450 and I noticed this rubber hose running from the top of the engine that ran to the original air box. Should I do anything with this hose? or just leave it unfiltered.


    I saw these K&N crankcase vent things at dennis kirk maybe I could clamp on one of those to the hose.




    Check it out and tell me what yall think?

    i have mine unfiltered right now, i guess it would be better to have filter on there, theres much cheaper filters than k&n try denniskirk or jc whitney

        Its probably a crank case vent that runs from the top of the engine rocker box cover--I guess any how. i think that some bikes even run the gas tank vent to the air box also--i theenk

          yeah i got that gas tank vent tube too I guess I will just zip tie that to the frame or something to that nature.

          I guess i will put a filter on that crankcase tube cause it wouldn't hurt.

          It would be cool if I could just plug the filter into the hole. That would look kinda trick. How do you go about measuring diameter those hoses? do you measure from inside wall to inside wall or outside to outside?

            I believe that all hoses are measured from the inside diameter

                Your engine will build up water and gasoline in the oil if you only run it for short trips. The point of that vent is to allow the extra fluids in the oil to boil off through when you go on a long run. I've had to blow mine out because it was full of foamy condensation which could cause a problem for you. I would have something hold the filter at the highest point of the hose so that anything that doesn't quite boil off goes back into the engine otherwise the filter will plug up.

                    Most racers just put the unfiltered end of it into some kind of a catch bottle, like a baby bottle or something. A filter isn't a bad idea for the street though, especially if you happen to ride down a dusty road. Absolutely don't plug it or seal the container. A friend of mine did this, oil pressure built up and gaskets started leaking. I think his exhaust smoked also.

                      Racing rules require catch can, you must have a filter it vents the crankcase, the filter also will keep dirt out

                        ok sounds like i need to buy that filter then.

                        Well I got the machine all put back together tonight and put gas in the tank. It took a while to fire it up since it has been dry for months. It finally fired with a huge flame!! :twisted: I don't have my exhaust pipes on yet cause I'm still waiting for tires(makes it easier with exhaust off) Then I noticed gas was leaking out of the carbs! uhh oh so I shut off the bike fast before it blew up.

                        I guess I need a rebuild kit after all for the carbs the seals well ain't so great. I got the leak down to very small run now. Since both tires are off the bike is angled pretty far forward so maybe thats why its leaking, but I doubt it. O well Thanks for all the help

                              Use a long section of hose and get the end of it as far back as you can, preferably behind the rear wheel. Tie it to the top rail of the rear subframe out of sight. Over time the smoke that escapes through it will make an oily mess.
