    Top End Speed

I recently purchased and Restored a 1980 GS1000G, as I have been fine tunning and taking it out for test rides I have found that in 5th Gear Im cruising at about 60mph @ 4,500rpm's. This gearing seems a bit low for a 1000 touring bike. I figured I would ask a bunch of GS lovin` Riders.

    Does that sound right ???

    Thank you.

    Re: Top End Speed

I'm sure the 1000 riders will chime in with their rpm to speed, but in the meantime, I show 3500 rpm @ 60 mph on my 1150E. But then, I probably have 50 hp on you.

        RPM

biggest complaint feels like it needs a 6th gear, the nice thing is you don't have to down shift to pull away, and you can load the crap out of it with the kitchen sink included my 1000 shows about 4,000 at 60 miles per

Since a GS 1000G doesnt have any sprockets, I assume youre asking me. :-) I think I'm 15/39, but dont hold me to it. Havent counted in a while. :-)

Welcome to the forum. Final drive ratio is 3.09 Their is no practical way to change it. The last of the GK's had a 2.90? final drive if you can find one. The down side would be loss of torque the shaft drive bikes have. I usually run my 850 about 6K on the freeway & no I don't do 65. It will run all day like that

Hummmmm, That old chain drive Dyno I'm on does 60mph @ 4000rpm.
BUT I have one more gear left 8)
                          70mph @ 4100rpm.

Yep Gee-sis is right, at about 110mph I start looking for that other gear.
I'm sure that other gear is on a 1200 Bandit.

I guess the Bandit would qualify well for that.

My sadly underpowered old shafty has such a difficult time attaining anything resembling high speeds. The necessity of inadequate gear selection can be really annoying, as when it gets above 110mph, you have to change up to 5th gear.

80 GS 1000G here and a hair below 4K rpm at 60 indicated.
you need to test your speedometer and tach, there is no guaranty that they are accurate, and ether one is most Likely lying to you.
