Hi guys, just kinda curious on the rear rim size from a 86 gsxr750? I think it's a 18 x 4 rim, not sure though. If it is, I should be able to run a 150 maybe even a 160 on it I hope. I want to install it on my 83 gs1100es, should be a very simple upgrade from my 17 incher, any ideas or comments on this? thanks Jeff

The 86 GSXR750 used a 18x3.50 wheel. The 86 GSXR1100 had a 18x4.00. Look for an 1100 wheel. -
1985-87 GSXR750 rear size is 18x3.5in
1986-87 GSXR1100 rear size is 18x4.0in
Both use the 5 bolt sprocket carrier pattern
1988 GSXR1100 had the best 18in rear- 18x4.5 3-spoke design
1988 GSXR750 went to 17in wheels with the 1100 following in 1989.
Dunlop's tire chart lists a 140/150 rear for the 3.5in rim with the 140 being optimum. Also lists a 150/160 rear for the 4.0in rear with the 150 being optimum.
Mid 90's katana 750's used a 17x3.5in rear also- these rears are pretty plentiful on ebay and also use the 5 bolt sprocket carrier. I would go with 17in wheels as the rubber selection is plentiful and constantly updated. Good Luck, Ed.

Would you happen to guess how much my gear ratio would change if I went with the 88gsxr1100(18") rim, I really don't want to lose any bottem end. Also would the cushion drive from my bike work on the 88 750/1100 rim, how about my brake rotor? The rims I am looking at buying are just that, the rim only, no bearings, no rotor, no sprocket holder. Was the 88 750 rim also 4.5"?Comment

1988 GSXR750 rear was 17x4.5in- I would not worry about gearing as swaping sprockets is easy. If your bike uses the 5 bolt pattern the sprockets should interchange, rotor and brake unknown. If you go as wide as the 4.5 you may also run into alignment issues. I am putting a Katana 4.5in (2001 750) rear on my 750 and will run a 160 radial rear. I bought an offset countershaft sprocket to help with allignment issues but have not yet sized it up as the motor is still in pieces.
Another option is to use the GS1150 rear- the 85 and 86 models had a 17x3.5in rear. I had one of these on my 750 prior to the recent Katana wheel swap. It was a simple swap- everything bolted right up and I ran a 140 rear. The only mod was to use a single sided rear brake arm to clear the tire. The 1150 spoke pattern was identical to the 750. Photo below shows the 1150 rear fitted. Good Luck, Ed
