Like many other bikes, my Kawasaki ZR-7S is described as "air/oil cooled" because it has an oil cooler (a radiator in effect). For cooling reasons, that Kawasaki has oil jets bathing the underside of the pistons.
i've always thought that oil jets were a good idea before liquid cooling became so popular.

The solution((yuck solution)) is simple We must all stop using oil and thre will never be anothe oil discussion.
Lots of action on rebuild parts and gasket sets though 8O

Amsoil and Mobil One both use and have used the same PAO basestock oil from the same manufacturer.

Exactly why you should go to Wal-Mart and pick up a 5 quart jug for $18.88 instead of the high price of Amsoil per quart.

And to enlighten the group, Oil has three jobs in the engine:

**Lube metal to metal parts, obviously
              **Remove heat from parts (cooling)
**Clean the internal parts of the engine

              Cheers,

Thanks Bob, you figure after I wrote a 30 page report on it 2-3 years ago...I'd remember that stuff.

If anyone wants the report (or ppt presentation which summarizes things) email me. It's got some good info.

One thing to remember is that in air/oil cooled bikes like ours, it is false economy to use a synthetic purely to extend oil changes. The air/oil cooled motors work the oil a bit harder than liquid cooled motors, so you should still stick to a reaonable oil change program. These days even basic motor oils are far better than when the GS was designed.

I've heard rumours about the qualities of some so called synthetics *i.e. castrol "syntec" , which basically state that they are not true synthetic, and are based on dyno oils, where as some other international brands are purely syntetic.

                      is this tru?

I usually run Motul in my bike.

Yes, It is. With exception of Amsoil and Mobile One, which are true PAO Basestocks, the other OTC oils, like the Syntec, are refined with Group III basestock oil, which, while a good base, is not a 'true' synthetic. In Europe, a Group III is not considered a synthetic motor oil, and therefore cannot be labeled as such. this is why, if you turn to the back of that Castrol syntec bottle, it plainly states: "Not For Sale Outside North America". The SAE pretty much bent down to the oil refiners to get this standard 'reduced' so the Group III stocks could be called 'synthetic'.
