    Gixxer head on GS

    OK, I'm looking through the archives and have seen some info on this but not everything I need to know.

    I'm seriously considering dropping an ail/oil cooled GSXR1100 head onto the GS. (Yea, I know it's not running yet, but I've got another idea :roll: ) From what I can tell I looks to be a straight bolt on. Is this true.

    Can anyone tell me what needs to be done to make this happen? I gather I need to remove the cam chain wheel on the gixxer. I also need to use the GS sprockets with the GSXR cams. What else?

    Give me all the good, the bad, and the ugly you know of please.

    If this works out I'll have a rebuilt GS1100 head for sale with a polished cover and powder coated caps.

      This info is from a racer from down under;

      If you can find an 88 J model 750 head go with that. higher compression and good ports. You'll be surprised how fast it will go. From memory the GS head flows about 70cfm and the GSXR flows about 100 so it's a huge jump for little money.

      It's more than just a stud change too unfortunately. 2 of the centre stud holes need a bit of pipe pressed in and sealed off. The 2 drain holes at the front need blocking as mentioned previously. I use brass welch plugs for that. you will also find that some cam tunnels are bigger than others. We've made our MPE GS1100 copper head gaskets a bit bigger at the ends so it helps to overlap here if you are doing this swap. You will also find that different GSXR heads have different cam chain guides at the front. What you need to do is look for the ones that have a similar slot to the GS so you can put the GS one back in. You will have to change cam sprockets with the GS ones and depending on what head you have, you can put a spacer approximately 5mm thick on the tappet cover and put the cam chain guid in the GSXR tappet cover. You also remove the can chain gear in the middle of the head.

        We used to make a stud kit for this swap, but it is no longer a popular mod so we discontinued them.

          Have just put a ported 1135EFE head on my 1074. New studs then straight bolt on!! Lots easier!!

            I'm thinking that I may postpone this little endeavor for a while, possibly indefinetly.

              Hi Swammy. You must be pretty close to getting that thing running by now, my vote is that you finnish it and get some use out of it before you get sidetracked. these projects can go on forever if you don't excercise some self controll. I for one would love to hear a ride report from you. Steve
