On a GS1000 with aftermarket oil cooler I run about 1/2 litre/quart extra oil to make up for the extra capacity of the lines and cooler. When checking the oil sight glass the oil is now close to the top rather than half way up. Hope this helps.'84 GS750EF (Oct 2015 BOM) '79 GS1000N (June 2007 BOM) My Flickr site http://www.flickr.com/photos/soates50/

I use a fairly large Earls oil cooler on my 1100e. When changing oil I just fill the crank with the recommended amount from manual. Then start the bike to allow the oil to fill the cooler. Then I add more oil using the site glass.
When I change my oil I usually disconnect cooler and let it drain before refilling. My inlet and outlet ports are on the top of the cooler. If yours are oriented towards bottom you may not need to consider this step.

Put the normal amount in, run the engine, wait 5 minutes or so, check the sight glass, fill to just under full, run again, wait 5 minutes, take a look. That's all I've ever done on more than 20 motorcycles...seems to work fine.
