    Gs1000 L K&N POD ALTERATION!

    Hi really great sight...

    I have a gs1000 l and have decided to change the stock air filter for K&N pods, but i intend to keep the standard exhausts for the minute. At the moment the bike runs on idle but as soon as i go and open the throttle hard it then dies, im presuming that it needs different jetting, as there is now a much larger consumption of air getting thrown into the engine.

    My question is , would anybody have an idea of what size jets i could replace the standard one with, so it would at least ride , as at the moment you open the throttle and well , near enough get thrown off the bike as it starts to/well stops..

    The carbs are slider non cv carbs. Main jet size i believe is a 95 .And Will i need to move the needle up or down on the slider as well.

    Every engine is different For VM carbs I would try 115 main & raise the needle 2 notches

        Thanks for the help. I couldnt get hold of any 115 jets, so ended up with 117.5's instead, the bike took a while to idol. I noticed that when i took it out for a ride there was nothing below 4000rpm, the bike near enough wanted to stall, giving it a bit of welly slipping the clutch, i managed to get going on the open road.

        What i found out though when the bike hit 4000rpm and i throttled it on , IT BLOODY NEAR RIPPED MY ARMS OFF. I wasnt ever expecting it to pull like it did, it revved quite well up to 6000rpm, then started to bog down a bit.
        I got it back to my garage and ripped out the plugs.

        Number one plug: Black sooty,
        Number two: On the way to turning white.
        number three: " "
        Number four: " "

        Now i know at least i have the thing running, but it wont do it any good like this.
        So far altering the jets however i have not moved the needle up as of yet, would this help the mixture as well ?

          Yep, moving the needles up will fix your mid-to-top end power and also fix up your lean mixture.

          You will have to increase your idle fuel mixture so that the bike is not so gutless down low in the rpm-range.

              HI

              I have now changed the main jet and altered the needle height , i took the bike out for a spin it seemed ok, pulling away was much improved , th e throttle would seem to function how its supposed to.
              However i did get a slight vibration feeling i think from the carbs? well not sure, maybe there not fully in sync, would that give of this sort of feeling ?

              Anyway i got the bike back and removed the plugs, no1 sooty but sort of tanned on the ceramic no2 starting to go nice tan , no3 white , no4 tan/white? could it be that the mixture screw on the carbs may now need a little tweek?

                RE sync the carbs then recheck the plugs

                    Also every time you mess with your mainjets, and often needle settings,you have to sync!

                      Hi

                      Right, now the carbs are in sync, i took it out for a ride and then rechecked the plugs,

                      No 1 black with tan ceramic( burning a bit of oil i think)
                      No2 tan
                      No3 tan
                      No4 WHITE

                      Could this be the air screw on the side of the carbs needs tweeking? I cant believe i need to put a different size jet just in this carb?. If memory serves me correct, the screws should be approx 1 1/2 turns out?

                          I'd guess 115 mains or close.
                          Jet needle clip in 5th position (bottom) with a .022" jetting spacer directly on top the e-clip.
                          Give the pilot fuel screws an additional 1/2 turn out from where they were, if it was running well before the intake mod'.
                          Adjust the side air screws for highest rpm.
                          Remove the two floatbowl vent lines and leave nipples open.
                          Carbs must be vacuum synched. Plug reads without a vacuum synch is a waste of time.
                          Check ignition timing before synching.
                          Carbs must be clean and float levels should be very close to .94"
                          Oil the K&N's properly.
                          Test at full throttle for the mains, 1/3 throttle for the jet needles, and cruise at minimal throttle position for the pilot circuit.
                          A chop test means to ride at a desired throttle position, then quickly pull in the clutch lever, shut the throttle, and turn off the key and coast with the clutch in to a stop. Read plugs. Take a rag and a piece of hose to fit over the end of the hot plug to help with removing/installing.
                          And on the seventh day,after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
                          Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!
