    horn not working

ok so my horn doesn't work... i cleaned the contacts the best i could... both where the horn connects and at the horn button... i hooked up some jumper cables to the battery and tested the horn... and it sounded alright... i have no clue why it doesn't work... any hints???

You need to get yourself a manual for the bike. It would just be following the wiring from battery to the horn.

I'd bet that it's the button itself. You might have some luck spraying contact cleaner into it, or if you take apart the left side controls you might be able to get at the innards of the button. After repeatedly cleaning/fixing the starter button, horn button, brake light switch, and turn signal switch on my '77 GS750 I bought brand new controls for a SV650 and bolted them on. The SV650 controls work great and feel better under my fingers, too. I now have a choke lever on the left handlebar that I don't use, though, because the '77 GS750 had a choke lever right on the side of the carb rack with no cable.

Are you looking for a performance replacement? Maybe one that plays engine sounds like a harley?

As it should be! Cables are a pain in the butt! Cables break, require lubrication etc. When I hop on my 1100 I'm STILL reaching my left hand down to carb level to put on the choke!

annnnnd i did take the button assembly apart and sanded the contacts with fine sand paper... i atleast knew to do that... i believe i need to get a manual... probably is the wiring... but then again the internals of that button were rusty... seein as how it was sitting outside for about a year or 2

cleaning the wires/connections with electrical contact cleaner, and using dielectric grease can be a big help.

LMFAO, we were just talking about those bikes over the weekend. I got to get me one.

I just figured there was a whole forum for support questions like how to fix a horn. Or maybe you were wondering if you pointed it so the sound comes out the ass end if it would gain you any speed? Otherwise, I don't get the connection to the performance forum.

Before you spend any money at least have a look at this thread first:

lol ok so you keep making me laugh... and i personally appologize Lecroy... i had no clue where to post this... i don't know my way around this site yet... but i hear if you slap some decals on... depending on how big they are, they'll get you an extra 5-10hp.

NP and no need to appologize to anyone. I was just thinking you would get better support by posting in the right area. If you just look in the index you see:

                      "Performance Mods
Tell us about any enhancements you have made to make your bike faster or handle better. The sky is the limit on this one."

I don't think the horn fits this very well unless there is something special about yours. Maybe where you place it on the bike adds just the needed weight to make the bike handle better?

                      Then there is...

                      "Technical Info
Place your GS repair questions/answers/suggestions here. If asking a questiion, be sure to include enough information in your post so that people can help you. Also be sure to search our old Q&A pages for more information."

Ahhh, repair questions. This may be a better choice.

Thanks for joining!! Have fun while your here. When you figure out how to gain an extra 10MPH from that horn of yours I want to hear about it!!!!
