I have been looking and trying to get all the information on doing the swap I have found one site said to grind the inside of the frame another to heat and move over What I found out last night that a stock steel swing arm off a bandit 600 will fit with some spacers I made on my lathe I also have a bandit 1200 swingarm and will have to make longer spacers to get to bolt it up the spacers work two ways one they make the use of the stock swingarm bolt to be the same and to make it tight in the frame I made them out of 6061 alum I hope that will be strong enough how ever I will be looking at getting steel stock and make it out of that But the swingarm that I talked about fit so far with no major cut heating so on I am also using a 92 gsxr front end p.s how do you put pics in ???????Tags: None

what are you trying to fit to what bike and for what aim? in other words, are you trying to fit biggr, or should i say wider rims? to what bike? and why, do you want wider yres, better handling, more modern brakes?

I am sorry everybody I am working on a 1982 gs 1100e and will be working on a gs750sd with a 1100 motor in it that is why I am going thru and converting to the big wheel and tire for extra grip plus the better handling of the bike but most of for the extra meat on the ground instead of the 130 mm that it came with and also for the brakes I got to ride a 1986 zx1000 we went in and put a stage3 kit and when we got done the bike would break the tire lose in 1,2,little in 3 and hookup were going fast but i was praying just to stop the dam thing /// Its nice when you have highway side road right in front of my shop Ha Ha Ha Yea

back end
well as far as the back end is concerned. if you have the ally swingarm (same as the katana one) then you can fit a wide wheel in with upto a 180 section tyre, so unless you want to go wider than 180, you wont need to change the swingarm, keep the twin shock back end!

I was planing on keeping the twin shock set up it makes it look stock untill you walk behind it than you see the 180 tire 8)

I also am very interested in this topic. (sorry, but I am about to jack your thread) I have a 81 gs750ex. I would like to swap in some newer sportbike standard 17in wheels with nice fat rubber. I would also like to keep it as simple as possible. Does anyone know the easiest way. Should I try to make a newer gsxr swingarm fit, should I try to stretch and widen the stock arm(smoke-dog has a thread going, and appears that he had enough room by just stretching the swingarm)
I also need to figure out the easiest way to get the sprockets to line up.
If anyone knows a website that kinda spells everything out for me that would be great.
And just so everyone doesn't give me the "if you have to ask it probably isn't for you" I have a fair amount of mechanical ablity, but I don't have much in the way of fabricating tools or money to go buy a bunch of swingarms and such. If I know what parts I need, and what parts I need made, I could get this thing done.
Finally Drewshotrodding, have you done the 7-11 swap? This is the other item I would love to get accomplished this winter. Same deal, a little guidance would be great.

Hi Guys,
Just performed the job of putting a 180/55-17 with 5.5" wheel off of a CBR1000F into a gs750 frame.
It's a bit tricky this one. I suppose you have the swingarm that fits your frame or you can make it fit and a 5.5" wheel that fits the swingarm. You will then discover it is impossible to make the chain run correctly. This is because the chain runs out more than our frames can take.
Little calc:
framewidth at pivot: 226mm
overall max. framewidth: 240mm
chainwidth: 25mm (530 chain!)
This framewidth is the same for all GS/GSX750's, GS/GSX1100's and aircooled 750/1100 katanas but not the 1150efe.
So when you have a 180 tyre, it only leaves:
(240/2)-(180/2)-25=5mm play! And then you need to realise that the chain has some play to each side of the sprocket too, so it can move around 1mm in each direction.
This means if you do it correctly you will have 1,5-2,5mm max play from chain-frame and 1,5-2,5mm max play from chain-wheel. This means milling down the sprocket carrier so that the sprocket will come in. Usually you can mill off the ''nose'' that only holds the seal and replace the bearing with a sealed one, then mill the sprocket face on the carrier down to make the sprocket get closer to the tyre, and you can also take away a bit at the spacer between the carrier and the cush, so the carrier compresses the cush rubbers a bit more.
If then you succeed to do this, you will find that some tyres indicated 180/55-17 on the sidewall are in reality 190 mm wide (Dunlop sportmax for example) mucking up your fitment.
Also, take notice that your swingarm isn't built assymetric, for example a CBR1000F and suzi TLs and SVs are assymetric!
There's another way to create more space and that is battering or grinding your frame outwards as to make room for the chain. Some people use a bottle jack to ''grow'' the frame a bit. I'd never do this, it's your choice.
To make the chain line up with the drivesprocket you'll need an offset drivesprocket ofcourse as the output shaft ain't long enough. AFAM makes these, 10mm offset is usually enough, and normally your tuning shop can deliver them.
To line up, fit the wheel in frimly, all bolts tightened and the both chain tensioners painstakingly measured up so the wheel sits straight. tHen take a straight piece of aluminum and attach this to the rear sprocket. Now you can see the lineout and correct if neccesary.
BTW an 1150 efe has got more room and will easily accept a wider swingarm and tyre up to 190/50-17.

I used a 1990 GSXR 1100 swingarm. I had to grind the frame 6mm wider (3mm each side). I used a 90 5.5x17 GSXR wheel, and made my own 5/8ths offset sprocket out of the old sprocket and a 17 tooth 530 c/s with a new DID O-ring chain. the stock 630 chain is 26mm wide (at the pins)and the 530 o-ring is 25mm. I do know that a 530 racing chain (non-O-ring) is thinner, but I haven't measured one. I would guess 2-3 mm thinner.

I fit a Michelin 180 without issues, and I just mounted up a Michelin 190 last night, but I haven't run the chain yet to see if it fits.
True: every 180 is different even from the same manufactuer.

The sprocket hub to the GS and the GSXR wheel are interchangable.The GS hub is slightly shorter(not as much offset)as the GSXR hub.I just did an 86 GSXR(swapped stock wheels for 95 wheels).If you go with 530 chain it gives you a little more room to.The chain needs to run true,and make sure to check wheel alignment.I have an 81 and an 83 with 5.5" GSXR wheels,these bikes look great with some late model wheels and rubber on them. you can tell I dont like to ....,,,,,in my post owell hey by the way all you guy that have posted the pic of the big wheel converson THANKS for the info right now I am getting ready to buy the 5/8 converson from schnitz racing they have the cheapest 250.00 make sure that you order the 530 sprocket I am going with the 17 tooth I won a 5.5 a week ago on ebay for 60.00 bucks also go my new header in and now I want to put a gpz 750 front fairing on the bike to break up the wind some pic at http//community.webshot.com/user/drewshotrodding
