Anyone pondering upgrading to a dual front disc....

Do it! I did today on my '78 750, huge difference in stopping power.
Go from stopping like they did in the seventies to stopping like they did in the eighties, very good improvement.
Just took a few hours, using bolt on stuff from a dual-disc 750.
    Thanks, Matt!

I did the swap on My 550 and there was VERY little information about it in the archive.

Please post some photos so maybe more folks will benefit from this worthwhile improvement. :-D

I'm planning on doing it for my '83 750T using the hardware from my L and the forks from another model.

I would like a quick walkthough as well - it would be very good info to have on hand...

Working on it right now for my 650L. Bought a front end from a 650G model, and, so far, everything has bolted right up. Only thing I am concerned with is the spacing between the forks not being right. I will find that out this weekend, when My wheels come back from the dealer (New tires). Unfortunately, I did not take pictures, my camera sucks. I am looking forward to riding it. I know I shortened the trail on the bike, should make the steering a little quicker as well as stopping a whole lot better. PM me if anyone needs a breakdown of what I have gone through so far.

TKent, what year and model was the donor bike that the parts came from? I have just basically given up in my attempt to do this swap on my '77 GS750. I have a mag wheel with rotors from an '81 750E, as well as forks from the same bike and the whole braking system as well. I got it all together to find out that I need more width between the forks to make it work. And to do that, I would need a triple tree setup from a newer (80-up) bike. Which means that I would also need a new wider fender and a new chrome tree cover up front. Except apparently the newer bikes use a different type of steering bearings that my bike takes, so I am SOL and giving up. Can you do a little writeup of what you used in your swap please? My bike is still apart and I am really interested in doing the swap if I can...

You can switch to tapered bearings. There are kits on Ebay to accomplish this. It's always easier to swap the entire front end from one model.

get the forks, discs, calipers from a dual brake bike....

remove the old and install the new...
In my case, ( '78 750 and staying with early 750 E parts) fork spacing, and diameter are the same 35mm, so it's a no brainer.
Just put on the dual brake forks, and brakes. The wheels I have already had the bolt holes for the second disc.
The front wheel braked with way less finger pressure, but the lever would touch the grip before the wheel locked up. The lines weren't visibly expanding but they would move around a bit under a good hard squeeze.
Installed the steel lines, lever now stops over an inch from the bar, tire is howling at that point.
I can lock the front wheel with two fingers if I pull really hard.
Can slow down fairly sharply with one finger and not much effort.

                  Pasteurized....

Get the forks, discs and calipers from a '78 or '79 750E, it has the same fork spacing and diameter fork tubes as the single brake 750. Everything truely bolted right on, no issues at all.
I have a tripple tree with wider spacing, I won't be using it now.
It's about a half inch wider, I can measure it exactly.
It is made for 35mm forks.
If you want it, email me please,

I would love a walkthrough, i am in the process of swapping out disks front and rear from an 81 gs750E to my 82 750TZ. I have the complete donor for parts so hopefully no problems are ahead.

I'm keeping the drum on my '83 750T. I like it a lot. Less chance of locking up, more "feel."

Thats interesting you say that, cause they reason im loosing mine (drumj) is because it seems to have 2 modes of operation, off and locked up with a fine line determining the 2.
In all honesty, i could live with drum but im hoping for better perfermance with the disks.

Perhaps it just needs to be adjusted? My drum is very progressive, giving an analog rather than a digital feel, if that makes sense.

Now I'm wondering if mine is just worn the hell out, and that's why I get that feel from it.
