Quieter Exhaust Options

Keep your eye out on Ebay for a stock exhaust. There are very few after market pipes to chose from, and of those they are mostly for more performance. MAC Exhausts may make a 4-2 replacement that isn't that loud.

Add a quiter can to the Vance and Hines. I'm using a carbon fiber from an R1. It adapted easily and comes in titanium and aluminum also. Take offs on e-bay are reasonable. Check out picks in my photo bucket. I have a spare aluminum in the garage now.

Do you have a photo of your R1 can mounted?

I'm doing the same thing. I have a Yosh 4:1 collector and can now, which I have mocked up on the bike with the carbon R1 can.

I've been finalizing my rear brake modifications to accomodate a Bandit arm so I've been waiting to see where my hanger will attach. Also have a brand new Suppertrap collector which I haven't tried yet but its the same dia. as the Yosh at the main pipe.

I had to scrape some of the carbon gasketing out of the R1 pipe to get it to fit, took about 5 min. If folks prefer the stainless look the Yamaha FZ1 cans are given away on ebay and their about the same dims as the R1. The other good thing about the R1 carbon can is the rivet that holds the hanger on the can be drilled out to allow the hanger to be moved or rotated up or down the can. The stock Yamaha cans are long and large in diameter so you have to like the look.

As quite as the R1/FZ1 cans are they flow a ton of air, I have a feeling it will dramatically improve mid range. Even if there is no improvement I'm with M-Tim in tiring of loud pipes. (Sorry to hi-jack your thread)

I agree with stiksave. Build your own pipe off the V&H header that you already have. I have built several off of V&H and supertrapp headers for my GS's over the years. Find a good pipe bender and it should be easy and relatively inexpensive. $80-$140 including a nice slightly used muffler from e-bay. You can get it much quieter than an old style V&H megaphone and nearly as quiet as stock if you desire. My V&H SS2r Street muffler is very quiet. I like to use GSXR mufflers because there are a ton of options. I have the aluminum V&H and a Two Brother's racing carbon can that I interchange. I hope this helps.

Here's a pic with the carbon fiber. Attached at the stock location. The bend in the R1 was perfect, just needed to be shortened a couple of inches.

Thanks for the quick reply with photos. Both great looking bikes, Stiksave have you had any clearance issues with the leading edge of the can touching down in right hand turns? I'm an 1-1/2" lower due to USD forks.

Simply try repacking the removable baffle. If all the packing is blown out your exhaust will be nasty loud.

Check out my link for a pic of my cunstom made D&D exhaust (I used a muffler and mid pipe from a Kawi ZX7R). Custom exhausts are not too difficult to fab for GS's if you have some skills and patients. Absolutely do NOT use a D&D muffler if you want quiet. My bike @ 7000 rpm's will about stand you hair on end. It sounds exactly like an AMA Superbike. It's loud, but "pleasing" LOL

I haven't had any clearance problems at all. Remember to replace the rivit with a sheet metal screw at the original bracket position.

I haven't looked into repacking the existing muffler. I have a friend who is willing to help me with all of the mechanical issues (experience mechanic and bike enthusiast) but it has to wait a month, until he's done with getting married. His wife wouldn't understand if he puts time on my bike instead of the wedding planning..go figure. :-D

Here's mine with a Bandit 1200 can and midpipe on a Mac header. It's kind of a lousy fit because I did it myself. If I went to a exhaust shop for the collector to midpipe joint it would have been a very nice and easy mod, but I'm cheap so I cobbled it together with some tin and a big clamp....

It's very quiet and flows well. It hurts top end just a little, but the low and midrange torque is great!

Take out the baffle and repack the muffler with fiberglass and rape it up.That should help it help me I have the same system.

I have a V&H on an 850 too. The system was new about 2000 miles ago and is rather quiet. My friends stock Honda Shadow is louder under power. But that doesnt stop me from smokin his ass.:-D
