    machinists needed ....

I am doing a front end swap on a 1973 gt550. I am fitting up a 1995 GSX fron fork and tree assembly.

the head bearing races need to be 48mm OD and I can only find 47mm.

Any machinists out there wanna cut some new races? or know a quality fix for my delemma?

I'll send the bearings as templates.

    Please send email to filmcolor@gmail.com

    I am in SoCAL.

    Thanks in advance,
    Brian

Look at tapered needle rollers instead of ball and race.

Get yourself a bearing book and look up all the sizes available. Go for taper rollers and remember there are 2 sizes involved. The cage size and the race size.
I find it hard to believe that you need anything machining. Bearings are standard size items even if your name is Aston Martin, BMW or whoever.

Think about the problem and then solve it.

          I know the size.

I know the size that I need. but it is not a commercial tapered bearing.

          Upper 25mm x 48mm x 14mm
          Lower (the problem) 30mm x 48mm x 14mm.

These are not made anywhere that I can find.

          however, I can find

          Upper 25mm x 47mm x 14mm, I need the OD (race?) remade to 48mm.

          Lower 30mm x 47mm x 12mm, again the OD (race?) remade to 48mm.

So I have a good handle on what I need... but, I still think doing it right means to have the bearing races machined to 48mm.

          what do you think?

I do machine work, and I can honestly tell you that you aren't going to be able to machine an existing race (the material is extremely hard). A far as making a new one, once again, you would need the right material, the inside and outside would both need to be ground, everthing would need to be heat treated, and then finish ground. The price would be prohibitive. If you had to you could get the closest size and make little sleeves that would take up the difference where the races mount. Personally, I would find the right tapered roller bearings and put them in. I know they are out there, just a matter of finding them. A good counter guy at an industrial bearing supply house would be able to find them for you.

Triton John is right. You can get bearings for a machine built in 1800. You can definately get bearings for any bike.
