    Can this be fixed? It's from an GS1150E

    Can this be fixed? It's from an GS1150E of course. Or is It new block time? If they are still available for a 1985 GS1150E. Note: I'm looking at this bike, I don't actually own It, yet.

    Needs:

    01. the front brakes have locked up, so the calipers have to be rebuilt,
    02. the yoshi pipe headers are full of rust and should be powder-coated,
    03. the right side bearing on the crankshaft is starting to make noise (this could mean an engine overhaul? I’m not sure if this bearing can be replaced without taking the whole thing apart?),
    04. the carbs need to be cleaned and rejetted,
    05. the air filters need to be replaced,
    06. and it needs a new battery.
    07. Cosmetically the tank has a large dent in the right side and a small dent on the left side,
    08. the front fender could be repainted,
    09. the rear brake light is broken,
    10. and It doesn’t have the side covers.

    I have repaired some that bad with JB Weld. You will have to use some cardboard on the inner curve to match the cases. Also fiberglass the type with metal in it will also work. Once hardened, sand to match and paint.

    The crank you can send off to Gardner Racing Concepts. They are great and have done several of mine.

      I should have mentioned that I'm not able to do the work Myself(No tools and I'm a bit handicapped), As I'm not too mechanically inclined, I'd have to have a shop repair It locally.

        Well if you can get it for the price it is listed at now, then if shop cost don't bother you, You can get a good used set of cases and have your crank rebuilt. Get the other things done and have a nice ride.

        It's just that with me shop costs scare me. They have too much overhead to cover.

          No shop costs wouldn't bother Me, But I have to wait until August before I get any cash and I wish It was now too. My late Aunt left Me some money from a Trust fund(near $85,312[US]), I doubt the seller would want to wait, So I watch. I'm sure something better will show up then, It always seems to do that.

            With that amount of money, I would wait for a good one. They are out there ready to ride for an affordable price. The cost of fixing up that one to someone who has to pay a shop to do it may definately be more than it's worth.

            To some of us who do this at home ourselves it may be worth while.

            I would wait for a good one. And when you are ready to buy ask the people on this board for any help you need. They are a great bunch of people.

              With that money, I would likely buy a new or newer Bandit, or something. Since your going to have to pay a shop for your maintenance, a newer bike will likely save you on the day to day costs of maintenance that you will have to pay them for. You might nickel and dime yourself to death on an old bike, especially one in poor shape.

                If you aren't gonna do it yourself, just having a shop crack the cases, rebuild the crank and putting it back together is gonna be a minimum of $1500. Getting the carbs sorted another $200-500, paint can be as much as you wanna spend but almost sure enough a minimum of $1000...

                Recently saw a KILLER low mileage 1150 in beauty shape for $2800. Heck, If I had trust fund money coming my way I'd talk to renobruce, his 1150 is immaculate and low mileage and he is selling for around $4500 I think? It's museum quality.

                    Being in California, This state has a 7500 mile limit, Under that and It's still New, Above that and It's used, It's I think connected to smog rules somehow, I did find these two bikes as examples:

                    I'm not to crazy about the custom paint job, It's ok, But the older Kat looks better to Me.

                        Considering the land($10,000) and the mobilehome($11,000) I'm putting on the land is down a short(325') dirt road that has a solid albeit slightly rocky surface(1" or less on the rock size), I'm not sure I'd want to get a bike with a 16" or 17" front hoop, Some parts near the edge of the road are a bit soft(3"-12" wide really, maybe less, varies and is shallow, It's made by rain runoff that the area gets sometimes, It's a desert), Paving is more expensive than extending the water main down the street($11,000 and this includes a $500 deposit and this is for water), At least the Gas main is cheap at $875, Setup may cost about $20,000 and being the mobilehome is going to be at least a '76(by county building code, includes everything), At least there is a sewer out front($3,578 Sewer main will serve letter, etc), Total housing costs are estimated to be $51,510, If I'm lucky I may get more like about $115,625 if a condo in Sacramento CA isn't sold then the primary heirs could take It and reimbuse the Trust for $22,500(It's selling for $242,500 as that is what It appraised for). Paving 325'x30'x3" of dirt road(County standard for thickness is 3") with an asphalt road would be nice, But may be more than I could afford as It would need an Engineering firm to make drawings and a contractor to pave It and the paving was estimated to be $35,000 or $3.50 per sqft(would include signs[street & Stop]). And I don't know If San Bernardino County requires anything below the paving(They might and getting an answer to that has not proven successful yet, Something to work on I guess). I'm not putting a permanent foundation under the mobilehome as that is required only for a mortgage, Which due to My small income of $836.00 a month, As I don't think I qualify for one even with a CalHFA low interest mortgage of about 5.25%(I get a cola once a year from SSI).

                        $ 836x Pay back SSI money for August to SSI
                        $ 1,345 used Gas Dryer(150), used upright freezer(178), Recliner(498), Queen size bed(419), Repair Sears Kenmore vacuum cleaner(100)

                        $ 160 Car Insurance and extra gas for moving boxes to New house
                        $ 3,838 Mitsubishi WD-73727 73" DLP Rear Projection TV(Google helped to find this price and It's the lowest yet, includes shipping too)
                        $ 435 MB-73727 stand for WD-73727 Free 2nd day air!
                        $ 4,118 Computer parts(for My current PCs, to complete two partly built PCs)
                        $ 219 Canon Power Shot A530 Digital 5.0 megapixel Camera[ebay]
                        $ 500 Pay back SSI money for Escort to SSI(Escort will be secondary vehicle, So this is mandatory, Motorcycle will be Primary vehicle as per SSI rules)
                        $ 8,500 used '84-'86 GS1150ES or GSX1100('91 Suzuki Katana 1100) or GS1100SD('82-'83 Suzuki Katana) or a GS1100E('82-'83), Plus parts and labor w/room for improvement(Debateable buying a GS1150ES while living on a dirt road)
                        $ 907 for shipping a motorcycle to Me(If a long distance, If Not My nephew and a steel ramp should do and prevent any damage to the bike, He has a pickup truck)
                        $ 9,490 Extra for house? (total $61,000? paved road could cost $39,000 for 325'x30'x3" with engineering drawings)
                        ---------------
                        $85,312 total

                        I do like the style of the Kawasaki zrx1200, But My experience with one Kawasaki 1000 Ninja didn't enthuse Me as It lacked any pep and when going up a grade It flooded It's charcoal cannister and wouldn't idle until It was dried out(dumb thing was built in to the tank) and I'm no lightweight at almost 350lbs now, I only weighed about 300 back then, But It was as comfortable as the GS1150ES and I've owned two 1150's, Should have kept the 2nd 1150, Oh well. Typing this isn't easy as I have concentration problems, I may not be hitting them hard enough and I skip ahead in My typing sometimes leaving some words out.

                          Rule #1) Don't buy a bike that needs major repairs if you aren't going to do the work yourself.

                          Rule #2) I forgot what it was. All you need is rule #1 anyway. :-D

                            Yeah a bike that needs more than a fork/front and rear end upgrade is not what I want as I tried that with My last bike or rather almost did, It can be expensive, It was a Honda CBR 1000, The Bike felt unstable in 20mph crosswinds to Me while I was riding It, Possibly cause of the rear tire not matching what what had been on there before. Beyond that It was ok, Just not My favorite type of bike.

                            Usually Rule #2 is see Rule #1, Unless You have a lot of money available. But not always.:-D

                              If you shop around you can find a nice 1150 for 4 to 5k..A pretty good one for 2,500 to 3,500. Go over to NMRAonline.com and post what you're looking for. A lot of California racers hang out there. Dragbike.com is a good place to occasionally find a nice 1150. Scott at S&K Racing sometimes has leads on 1150's. Send Scott Valetti from dragbike.com an email. Not too long ago he had leads on 2 nice 1150 shootout bikes. Bruce Van Sant also has 1150's and parts available. Joe Franco back east also may be a good lead to find used 1150's. You can also post on the mirockracing.com. There were a fair amount of nice 1150's raced that came from the south several years ago. Marion or Marvin Ford at Ford Bros Racing may also be able to point you in a direction. There was also a guy in the Vegas area buying and selling 1150 stuff. I lost his contact info/name. You may be able to search him up.

                              Be careful with your money. 85k sounds like a lot of $$. It will go fast if you dont watch it. I see things on your list that maybe you could put off or get cheaper. Money is hard to come by and even harder to replace when gone. Having cash is better tha having stuff that will depreciate in value. I dont want to preach, but I have made mistakes with money, big money, that I wish I hadnt done. So if you dont have the means to recover, think everything over very carefuly.

                              If you find something, run it past the guys/gals here if you're unsure of the deal. Good Luck and have fun!
