    Tuning 33 smoothbores

    I have a set 33 smoothbores on my 83 gs 1166, The problem I'm having is that the idle is hanging up at around 3k. It will eventually come back down to 1100rpm and if I blip it it will come back down. There doesn't seem to be any intake leaks.I have 33s on my 82 1166 and they are set up exactly the same as these but don't have this problem with those carbs.Could it be worn throttle valves.On the 83 I'm using the stock pet cock with the vacuum line. I plugged the vacuum line and ran the pet cock on prime and it didn't change. Also I moved the throttle return spring on the carbs from the middle position to the firmest setting and they still hang up.For the record Im running a 1.5 throttle valve, a 135 main jet ,a 1.0 air jet , a 20 pilot jet a 6DJ30-4 jet needle and a 261 0-8 needle jet. Like I said I have been running the same set up in my other bike with no problems. Although it might be a little on the lean side.Thanks Tony

    Maybe not but you've got a lean condition causing this. Try going up one size in the pilot jet and see if that helps. Have you taken your intake manifolds off and inspected them? You may have cracks in them that you can't see with them on the bike. Good luck.

      how about swapping the carbs around on the bikes and see what happens, then you will know if it is carb or motor issues.

          I second Ryan, swap the carbs. You'll save yourself countless hours of trouble shooting by knowing for sure if it is in fact the rack of carbs or not. If you do swap the carbs, be absolutely certain to NOT swap the boots. If the problem stays with the bike, then swap the boots. These tests will narrow down if the issue is your rack of carbs, your boots or on the bike somewhere else.

            Thank you for all of your help.After taking the carbs off for the fourth time on friday I noticed there was some slop or free play between the throttle valves and the lever assembly.There must have been enough slop to let the throttle valves stay open a little bit. After tightening down the phillips screws that hold the lever assembly. The bike runs great. Almost feels a little rich on the bottom and I am two turns out on the mix screw.Maybe it won't be too rich next week when the temps are supposed to be in the 50s for highs.
