I am willing to go the extra route of steering stabilizers and reinforcing the frame, even as far as to reweld the mounting brackets...anybody have any ideas or expperience behind this situation?

Bigger engine for 85 GS550E? What will fit?
I am looking to fit a larger engine (preferably a GSXR or Katana model) into my 1985 GS550E frame. What will fit is the question???

the GSXR600 motor has a chance.. But it isn't likely. There's a lot of power available if you're willing to go the route of a 4-1, pods, and a stage 3 dynojet kit. If that's not enough, yoshimura made cams too. You'd have to be crazy to be sane in this world -Nero
If you love it, let it go. If it comes back....... You probably highsided.
1980 GS550E (I swear it's a 550...)
1982 GS650E (really, it's a 650)
1983 GS550ES (42mpg again)
1996 Yamaha WR250 (No, it's not a 4 stroke.)
1971 Yamaha LT2 (9 horsepower of FURY.)

Don't know about any '85, but I just finished bolting up a late 80's GSXR 750 into my '78 GS550. Like I said, don't know about the '85 model, but if it would any help, the newer engines will fit in the older frames with a little work.
let me know if you want or need any addition info.

This the start of my project. Should be ready to ride by Spring. Currently it is tore down getting the frame braced and welded and I will start putting it back together as time allows.
The engine fit right in (had to make mounts of course). It is actually smaller in every deminsion (except across the top of the head) than the older GS550 engine. Plus about 40lbs lighter. Only major issue was the carbs. Had to relieve the edge of the gas tank to get it to set down (it will be cut for knee pockets anyway). Of course I had to get creative with the airfilter mounting, but it should work out.
Let me know if you have any specific questions,
later,

See, I bought a ragged out GSXR that had a bad engine (one missing piston and rod because it spun a rod bearing and proceeded to disintegrate the piston). I was only going to use the front end and wheels from the bike. One thing led to another and an engine rebuild later this is what I came up with. Just wanted a neat little run around bike that might run and handle fairly well. The engine swap was an after thought. Considering how lite the bike will be, it should be a pretty spirited little ride. I will also be running a cafe style tail section and the rear of the bike will be approximatly 2" taller after I make the shock mounts and get the ZRX shocks on there.
The original question was whether a later model engine would fit in an '85? If the frames are similar to the '78 as far as mounts, I would see no reason why it wouldn't. The way my mounts are made and given the nature of suzuki, I could put a GSXR 1100 or a Bandit 1200 engine in there with no more modifications. The way I am bracing the frame, it should handle it. One more note, the only engine mount that had to be cut off the frame was the bottem left mount. All the other mounts lined up with just a few spacers and a few different brackets. I also need about a 1/16th of an inch more chain clearance, but that can be taken care of with a little imagination.[-o<

If the 600 fits then a 750 will probably fit too. The old 600's were supposedly the same size physically as the 750. An old member was attempting it here but I don't think he ever finish before being killed in an auto accident.

Currently the frame is ready to be powder coated and then I can start putting it together and finishing it. Hope to have it done by summer of next year.
For the record, the engine I am using is a 750. Don't know if I ever said that or not
