    GSXR Head on GS1100

I read that a gsxr head can be installed onto a gs1100 engine with modified cylinder studs. What year and size head fits? And what would the benifits be from the swap?

That was the website that peaked my interest but it doesnt go into more depth about what year or size gsxr head. Also how to mount it and the gains that would result and why it happens. And now I am really interested in what the purpose of angle milling a head is.

Thanks for the response though, I am learning more about what these engines can really do.

IMHO there is much power to be gained from porting the stock GS head .
Yes I like the GSXR idea but for practical purposes I'll stick with the ole GS head .
he shows the oil cooled GSXR head I would imagine itis the 1100 version . the 1100 Katana head would work as well .
I think in 1992 or so they went to water cooled wih the GSXR and they will not work

Now I am wondering if instead of going through the process of getting a new head if I could have the stock head milled down to increase the compression. And install a dyno ingnition with a timing advancer to prevent detonation. And install cams from a 83 1100.

Would that be a better route to go for more performance instead of the gsxr if I am not going to be putting in a larger piston kit?

How much could the head be milled down, is this where angle milling would be a good choice?

And I did mill the head down would I have to have the valves cut down at all to avoid contact with the cylinders or is that just a matter of degreeing the cams?

Myself I would not mess around too much milling the head for compression as I would get the ports shaped up and a good valve job done .

Heck drop a tooth or two on the front sprocket and the bike will accelerate like it has a big bore kit LOL!!!

I was going to do that also with the performance mods. I really love doing wheelies!!!

We have had this discussion before!!! The Katana 1100 is a GS 16 valve air cooled motor.
Anything that does not have a GS series motor in it IS NOT a Katana, a sticker does not make a Katana!!!

www.bertaut.com shows pictures of it being done, but there's no technical details on how it was achieved.

I for one would be interested. Think about it this way, you could spend thousands on massaging a GSX11xx head, or... a thousand on a stock GSXR1100 or bandit1200 oilhead that will outperform the modified GSX11xx head.

1150 head bolts right in with the use of 1150 top end stud kit. gsxr head requires some mods to make it work.

I have put an 1150 head on both my street bike and the Tubo bike. You gain HP but you lose the stock tach. Have to go Autometer or some other electric tach. I think its worth it.

Do you know anywhere I can get a 1150 head for a good price?

I would watch ebay. Sometimes they go really high, but other times you will see them go low.

I have been keeping an eye there but like you said they are few and far between let alone sold for cheap.

                              Thanks
