Yeah I think if Pingel made them with a more positive stop it would be kinda' helpful. The one good thing is is that if you're close to the middle it should still put you in the "reserve" mode. But I too have done the look and double check also. When the bike starts sputtering and you are in a hurry it's hard to be sure.

Mine has a short 90 degree throw from on to off and has no reserve.
I specifically ordered it without reserve as I use mileage for fillups and do not wait until the bike starts sputtering in traffic to notify me its time to get fuel.

Yes the reserve is a feel by luck thing but not dificult.

I don't bother with reserve as my 1981 GS1000ST never came with a reserve position on the POS OEM petcock, so I have always had to rely on the (extremely conservative) OEM fuel gauge, but that's fine, I've never run out of gas, so no biggie.
Using the "mileage" system to determine when you need more gas is ok, but once again, be conservative, obviously city commuting, canyon racing or "two up" touring will reduce your fuel economy, so use that reduced gas mileage figure to estimate when you need a fillup, unless you like pushing 500+ pounds of bike. I like my pingel
I put on on my 1980 GS750E this winter. I agree on the lever moving easily but I did highly dislike the vacum one I had in its place.... I never have fuel feed problems now and I am slowly but surely learning where that Reserve sweet spot is on the valve.
Know its late but IMO after hooking my new one up to what I know know about it...I say it is well worth the money. I got the 6211-CH round with the corresponding adapter plate. No clearance problems with the stock airbox as I had read from some.
