Clutch basket for 78 GS1000?

This is definately not the stock basket. Does anyone recognize this? Is it an aftermarket basket? Supposedly out of a 78 GS1000. He also lists the cover, metal plates and fiber plates... all different from stock. Dibs if it's anything worth having. :-D

Bruce, absolutely not for a GS1000 motor. It all looks worn out anyway. Very queer looking basket and fiber plates....I did see something on ebay you may be interested in though .....BadBillyB

Bad link.... but looks like it was for a gasket set. I just bought one this morning. It's a Vesrah complete kit. Got it for 63.94 shipped.

I sent him a question and asked if he was sure this basket came from a '78 GS1000. Here is his response:

I wonder if it is some kind of old aftermarket clutch? It looks beefier than the stock one. I wonder also if I would be able to find new fibers for it.

There were never any aftermnarket (available to the public) clutch baskets or clutch hubs made for the 2V1000.....That is why my GS1000 dragbike motor is full of 1100 parts, including the clutch.......The 1100 4V motors came out right on the heels of the 2V motors and they suffered a lack of aftermarket support. Fitting an 1100 clutch into a GS1000 requires a bit of custom machine work and special parts but gives you access to NEW parts.....I have looked at that pic of the basket a few times and it reminds me of the prehistoric shark they found off the coast of Japan.....I have never seen anything like that before....To my 50 year old eyes, it almost looks like it has a "straight cut" gear on it.......Bruce, I would pass on this one and look for a "cherry" low mileage basket that you can put a HD backing plate on......BadBillyB

You could ask the guy how many teeth are on it, or ask to see the backside and look for welds. As it has been said it is not a stock 2v piece. I don't doubt the seller when he says it came out of a 2v motor, it just wasn't put there by when the motor was built by Suzuki.

Like BillyB said, looks like the motor was fitted with an 1100 straight cut gear set and a solid basket. Looks a bit worn (hard to gauge "depth" of those tab grooves from the picture).

I have a straight cut gear set and billet basket (all 1100 parts) in my 2v motor, so they are out there and can be fitted to work.

I seem to remember that I had a choice of a the beefed up stocker or a billet hub back in the 80s when I went for the former.

It looks like a GSX1100 basket to me, I think it was GS1100 (4V) to you guys in the States, I put one on my GS1000 (2V) when I built it for dragracing in the early '80's. That was because it caused less drag in the oil because it was a smooth outer diameter.
Also as BadBillyB says there weren't many easily available clutch parts around for the 2V GS1000, so you had to use what was available.
There again it could be a very rare MTC basket!!8-[ 8-[ 8-[

Was it a straight swap? And as Billy said, it looks like it has a straight cut gear on it?

Its a long time ago!
I think I had to shorten it, but I'm not sure now. I remember that I turned the outer diameter to a smooth finish, and drilliing holes in the O/D to let the oil spin out.
It fitted straight on though, using the same bearings etc.
But if it is a straight cut gear then I would suspect it may be out of a performance motor, and that would mean a crank strip to fit the corresponding gear to the crank.
The standard GS(X) clutch uses the same helical gears as the 2V GS1000.

I have read that the 1000 and 1100 have the same gear on the crank and clutch. So I assume I could get an 1100 straight cut crank gear.
I looked at the microfich for the 1100... this one is definately not it.

The clutch on ebay looks alot like the GLX clutch, but it is different. The basket, fiber plates, and the cover are different. Here's the ebay stuff:

I think it might very well be the MTC. I went to their website, and it looks very similar to their stuff.
