EXCELLENT! Thank you for your interest in our classic motorcycles, Brian...as opposed to just concentrating on the lastest sport bikes. I do believe that if the shock is well designed, and your company can come thru with good customer service, you will create a very loyal customer base here. :-D
Case in point: Over at Maximum-Suzuki.com, Dale Walker (founder/owner of Holeshot.com) has a very loyal (rabidly so) customer base with the Bandit & Katana owners. Not just due to superior craftmanship of his custom products, either. Over and over, guys will say it is the personal/professional courtesy and killer customer service that brings them back again and again.Mike

Actually, the lady that answers the phone over at Holeshot (Sue, I believe her name is) does so to support a daughter who has a great deal of medical problems, not because she has low self esteem and fake boobs. Never had an issue with Dale, either. I have spoken and emailed him and he has always been willing to answer GS questions because he has built several GS based drag bikes...and he doesn't even make products for Gs's. As far as affordability goes we are rock bottom for what you are getting. A fully adjustable piggyback roadrace shock absorber for around 200 (it will be a little higher with compression/rebound dampening addded)
Can you buy shocks for less? Yes you can. But not built,warrented and featured like these.
To directly answer your question. There will be a cheaper version for Honda - as they are already being sold. i dont forsee a less featured shock for the GS in the really near future unless there is a demand for it.....more on that later.

I don't mind paying for quality but I don't want a hard ride at all.
I would think lighter springs and lighter oil would do it but you certainly know more than I do.

If it's fully adjustable for preload & both compression & rebound damping it should be no problem to dial in either a hard or soft ride within reason.
Changing spring & oil weight will obviously move it one way or the other for those outside the norm...
Just the way I understand this type of shock.

Please keep in mind that 'roadrace' for me really refers to consistent cornering. That is what you get with a piggyback shock. The capability to absorb more heat due to the extra oil in the piggyback reservoir. The ride will be very compliant. If you begin to push your GS thru the twisties the cornering dynamic will NOT change. A non piggyback model will start off great and then will begin to fade, so to speak, as time moves on. One analogy would be to compare drum brakes to discs. Drums are great for the first couple of stops but after that ......yikes.....well you get the idea. Piggybacks dissipate heat........

An adjustable valve will regulate oil flow in and out of the reservoir. This regulates compression and rebound dampening. You are very correct oil viscosity plays a big role

Heres my old shock and the new progressive Im gonna put on. The 25 yr old 30K mile stockers dont feel much different, off the bike, than the new ones. Ill give em a try but I really want the Vipex. Brian, Ill send you this OEM shock.
