Buy four quarts but use the site glass when you fill, then run it for 5 minutes, shut it off for a couple of minutes and add oil to bring it up to the proper level using the site glass.
This should all be done with the bike on the center stand.

And a clean filter.
Bring it up to "warm" like Steve said, 5 minutes or so.
The site glass has an upper and lower mark.
DO NOT OVERFILL it.
My 1000 likes it close to the top, not the lower mark.Keith

Oil Change on a 79
The site glass is that Dark Circle at the lower left near the oil filler cap. It may be difficult to see the level so do it in a well lit area or use a flashlight. Also per the manufacturer's instructions insure the bike is on the center stand and level when you are checking the site glass. Here is a photo to help.

I believe it takes 4.2 quarts with a filter change. I changed my oil last week, I have an oil cooler so it took 5 quarts to get mine to the upper level.
