    Thanks Lee,

What year 550 are you using the Dyna S on?? I talked to the guys at Dyna (not a warm fuzzy there I must say), & they claimed they had no Dyna S product that would fit on my crank (too tight), & the mounting plate would not match the screw holes. Also, Jeff at ZI said they would not work either.

How did you did it?? I imagine it could be modified to fit if need be, just wondering if it's worth the hassle - from your comments, it sounds not.

What ohm coils did you use? I just bought 5 ohm replacement dyna coils, mainly because the spec says the OEM coils will range from 3-5 ohm and i thought it best to have the high end covered because i'm still using the OEM ignitor. Which brings me back to my original thought, what do I replace that with when it dies? I was thinking of the Dyna S product, but it's matched to their 3 ohm coils.

Just for talking purposes, can you use the 5 ohm coils with the Dyna S ignition system anyway?? (I didn't really get a straight answer from the kid at Dynatek). Or, should I put 3 ohm coils on now (using the OEM ignitor), with an eye towards "upgrading" to the Dyna s in the future? I haven't yet received the new5 ohm ones yet, so I think can return them before i use them and egt the 3 ohm instead.

    My head hurts...

Whoever you bought your coils from didn't do a very good job helping you. The 5 ohm coils are for bikes with points. You want 3 ohm coils whether using the Dyna or not. As far as Z1 goes, I'm surprised they gave you the cold shoulder. When I talked to Jeff, he was very receptive to my idea of using the Dyna S for the later model bike. An earlier model mech. advance will fit up to your crank. The Dyna S plate has three slotted mounting screws to fit up to the earlier GS blocks, whereas our pickup's plates only have two screws, located 180 degrees apart. I ended up making my own plate that mounts the Dyna pickup and has 2 slots made with a chainsaw file. I also shimmed it out from the block about a half inch with some round steel spacers bought from Lowes.

Anyway, I made another post about this before, and it has a picture:

My bike is an '83 550 - same ignition as your model.

Thanks for the excellent ignition upgrade info Lee

I talked to both Dynatek people & Jeff at Z1 about my 5 ohm dyna coil selection, and installation of a "future" Dyna S system on my "85 GS550 L.

I didn't mean to imply I received the cold shoulder from Jeff at Z1 when I spoke to him about this stuff yesterday. He gave me accurate info, I think I mis-interpreted what he meant though. He told me Dyna didn't make a unit for my bike, which I took as meaning I didn't have an option of using one. You are evidence that notion is incorrect.

The people at Dynatek on the other hand didn't exactly inspire confidence in me regarding their technical info about these older GS bikes - they seem to have some basic look-up info accessible to them & if your bike's on their list fine, if not, then they tell you the Dyna S won't work. Period - can't really explain why it won't work, they just tell you no. Of course as you know, the "target" model years for these units is essentially the years PRIOR to the OEM switch to electronic ignitions, which is around 1982 for our 550's.

At this point I am just changing out the coils & leaving the stock ignitor, although I am now realizing that it's most likely a matter of WHEN, not IF, I will have to replace the ignitor. I'll entertain the Dyna S system at that time. Who knows, might be next week!

The reasons I selected new 5 ohm Dyna coils are:
        - The OEM coils (powered by the stock ignitor) spec out between 3-5 Ohm.
        - Due to production issues at Dynatek, new 3 ohm coils will not be available until the first part of August (or about a month from now, maybe).
        - The 5 ohm coils will tax the the GS's minimal charging system a bit less**.
        - For basic street riding, the spark difference between the 3 & 5 ohm coils will be indistinguishable **

        - The Dyna S ignition system CAN be used with 5 ohm coils, even though the Dynatek people will tell you it can't. **
** Information from Jeff at Z1 Enterprises.

          Hi Mike,
I've been watching this thread with enthusiasm because my 85 550ES is doing exactly the same thing. It starts and idles perfectly, revs up just fine in neutral, but no power under load at all. It'll barely do 50 mph, and there better not be any hills. I'm quite sure the problem is fuel starvation on mine because if I choke the motor while under power it'll actually accelerate more like it's supposed to which tells me it's not a fuel delivery problem, but some sort of blockage problem within the carbs. Anyways, I thought I'd mention this in case you haven't tried the choke trick, and am patiently waiting to see what ends up being the problem with yours since our symptoms seem very similar.

          Mike
