    Need Help from the Experts!

    Hey guys,

I have a '96 GSXR bike that I got super cheap and I want to install the front and rear onto my '79 GS 1000. I have checked on the parts microfiche and notice that the bottom steering head bearing is the same size on both bikes, but the upper bearing differs.

    My questions are as follows:

Has anyone found the correct upper bearing to fit the stem onto the '79 steering head? The fiche shows that the '79 upper is sized at 30x55x17, while the '96 upper is 25x47x15.

I know that I will be losing ground clearance, but how much? Will the stock pipe be dragging on the ground, or will it only affect cornering clearance?

Any issues with the rear swingarm, other than alot of fabbing? I don't mind doing the custom work, just looking for a heads up on possible problem areas.

I have read alot of threads on here with regards to the parts swap, but hav not uncovered anything to do with this particular issue. From what I can see some other models of bikes are a better choice, but the price was too good to pass up on this one.

Thanks in advance for the help. I don't think I have read a more informative and helpful forum than this one, and you all make it the best!!

    Keep it rubber side down!

It would probably be easiest to swap the stem from the GS into the GSXR bottom triple. Otherwise you'd be looking at spacers for that top bearing which might get a little tricky when you try to put the whole mess together.
