    prodject dragbike

ive started to take an intreast in ama dragbike's bracket racing and i want to build a drag bike. so im going to keep posting and updating the status of my prodject in this thread.
The parts i have so far:
1981 GS 650 E 5,000 Original miles!! flawless bike (well almoast)
    $300
1993 gsx 600 f Threw a rod baring threw case but still runs on 3 cylenders
    $400
    2002 gsx 600 f swing arm
    $30

I have alot of work ahead of me but i think i can get it done. i want to exted the swing arm and a mono shock and run a busa rear wheel. i plan to take the forks off the 1993 gsx along with the wheel. i want to use the 650 frame and i need to find an 1100 engine.

im open to any sugestions i admit i know little about gs but i know a bit about mechanics and ive work at a motorsports shop the last 2 years
hopfully i will have picks by this weekend. all feed back i welcome!

Welcome, I hope you are ready because drag racing is a disease with no cure! Anyhow, I am building a similar project based on an 82 gs1100. Just a few words of advise / caution:

If you want a singe shock rear end, purchase a gs1150 and save yourself a lot of money and some headaches (plus you will have the "better" 1150 motor). If you wish to stay with what you have contact McIntosh Machine at 937-687-3936 or look them up online. I believe Terry does a conversion from dual shocks to a single shock on the GS, but it is not cheap. ( I will start with an 1150 next time, however I received the 1100 for free )

That said, I am using a +2 - +6 adjustable dual shock arm on my bike, set up for a 6" busa wheel and a 530 chain (the 630 will not fit) When used in conjuction with a 5/8" offset sprocket kit everything lines up, even retaining the "stock " shocks. This will cost you around $900 and you will need the busa wheel, caliper and spacers; call and talk to Terry and he will be able to give you some guidance, he has helped me a lot! It took a while to reach him at the shop, as he is very busy!

As for the front suspension, do some research on this site and others online and you will find a great deal of info on the early 90's gsxr 750 & 1100 conversion. It is a drop in, however, the Hayabusa front wheel and rotors will cause you some headaches. I am fitting a Hayabusa front end now, however this will not be a drop in like the GSXR!

      Good Luck,
      Justin

Soooo much cheaper and easier to buy one already done.

        frame/wheels mods
        engine mods
        electronics
personal safety gear-- full leathers after 120 mph
licensing-- Doctor visit and NHRA/IHRA fees faster than 9.99 sec

but it is worth every bit
SUZUKI , There is no substitute

Welcome to the site. Sorry but I don't know squat about the smaller engines. You have the right idea, have as much fun as you can spending the least amount of $$$.

            Better engine?

"plus you will have the "better" 1150 motor" so if you were to compare a 1100gs motor to a 1150gs motor. the 1150 would be the beter of the two for racing? i dont know to much about GS motors yet but i would have to imagine they are pretty simular. i would bet they use the same crank block and heads and there only diffrence is bore? but that is something im going to have to research. ive scoured the internet for GS preformance parts and there seems to be more for the 1100 than the 1150 but that dosnt mean its better. So my question is, Which is better and why?

Thank you every body for the warm welcome and i appreciate the feed back i hope to hit the track soon.. and hopfully pics by the end of this week

If your building a drag bike, I would go with a Busa at this point. It's only a mater of time before the GS parts are gone.

Between the 1100 and 1150 its a wash. The wrist pin diameter is larger on the 1150. The primary gears are different too, but you would never use the stock gears anyways, so this is a wash. There is also a spacer that is added in the 1150 transmission. If your staying with stock parts, the 1150 head will flow a little better, but if your porting and putting new valves in its a wash. I have heard that the 1150 heads were a little stronger, but I don't buy it.

Rule #1 with E/T, it's about doing the same thing everytime. Too much power does you no good if you can't plant it to the track (the same every time). We have guys that run very quick at our track but they are not the ones winning.

Stay with the smaller engine and just have fun with it. Once you figure things out, you need to look at a different bike just to get some aftermarket parts, like a slider. One of the top racers at our track rides a stock Busa with a slider, auto, small tire slick and bars. Pretty trouble free setup.

As true as it is that it would be much easier for me to go the route of just buying a newer bike or an already built bike i still insist on building my own Gs dragbike. Theres something about building your own race bike that gives you a sence of pride. not that people who buy there bike dont have pride its just a difrent pride. plus i would like to see the look on peoples faces when i beat them with an older bike \\/ lol. so in all im not saying i wont buy a second drag bike but i want to build my first

If you build it you will go fast.

The parts are out there you just have to watch and look for the good deals. You can spend big money if you don't spend your time looking around. How fast do you want to go?

I build dragbikes for a living & TRUST me on this one, buy one ALREADY done!!! It is fun to build one the way you are talking about doing but WAY more expensive! Also, if you ARE going to build it yourself start with a GS 1150 or 1100 frame. If it is drag only you can get 1100 frames CHEAP, I have some! Welcome to the site & good luck! I will be glad to help you in any way even if it is just to answer questions. Ray.

How do you make a living building dragbikes? Post some pictures of the bikes you have built!!

                          How fast?

How fast do i want to go? well the type of racing im intreasted in is the AMA dragbike street e/t. and like you said early thats more on consistancy than speed. but that being said no one wants to be cosistantly slow lol. i would like to run a high 9 or a low 10 but i have no race experiance which is why i chose e/t racing so i could get the hang of it before i try to take it to a competative level.

Definitely best to buy a finished bike. I bought a finished bike that runs low 8's for well under 5 grand. You would spend that to run mid 9's on a GS or KZ
