    Dynojet Kits

Hi folks. I have an 83 1100E. I'm pretty sure it is running lean. Plugs are unsullied. The bike likes to ping when hot coming onto the throttle. Engine runs hot (260F on a hot day, unless the gauge is lying. I am installing an oil cooler this year)). I am thinking a Dynojet kit would solve the problem without too much hassle. I plan to either keep the stock airbox, or go with pods, but definitely richen up the mixture. Would a Stage 1 kit do the job, or would a Stage 3 be a better bet? Would a Stage 3 overfuel the bike if the rest of the intake system is left stock? I am not going with aftermarket pipes.

It could also be a case of too much timing advance, but I can't see how this could be with everything fixed in place.

Can leanness be cured by lifting the needle a bit? It tends to backfire a bit on trailing throttle or small throttle openings. The bike runs well otherwise, except for that damn oil leak I can't find!

Try raising the needles a bit, it won't hurt... might even do the trick if this is more midrange than top end.

They say to use stage 1 for stock airbox and stage 3 for pods, but IIRC for the GS700 at least you buy one jet kit which includes both stages.

I'm not so sure that the jetting is the problem. My bike does the same thing (ping) as your's the way that you describe it. Mostly when I'm going uphill in what may be too high of a gear and roll into the throttle. However, it did it when it was stock, it also did it after stage one jetting, 4-1, K & N filter were put on. And now it still does it with stage 3 jetting, pods, and 4-1 exhaust. So it could be something else. I always kind of suspected the timing because I've had cars, back in the day that would ping in the summer if the timing was'nt just right. I'll be watching this thread with high interest to see if you find the cure. I had a buddy tell me that it was bad gas but no matter where I get gas or even with 89 octane it still does it when it's hot. So I don't think it has anything to do with the quality or octane of the fuel.

Try running 91 octane (or higher) and see if it stops. That definitely sounds like timing to me.

          timing

gday mate, doesn,t sound lean, check your timing with a light, sounds like its too far advanced for the fuel your using, you have a limited amount of adjustment on the plate of the ignition under the right sidecover,on the engine, hope this helps,regards.:-D

I think its an octane issue also. I'd go with 93 octane. The oil temp gauges aren't reliable in terms of actual numbers but the heat of your engine on a summer day is contributing to the detonation. An oil cooler will help a lot.

IMHO adding the pods and then re-jetting for them won't fix this problem but it will provide some other benefits. The timing will help a little but I think the cooler and 93 octane will solve 90% of the problem.

Well, I tried retarding the ignition, no dice. I slipped the ignition plate as far forward (clockwise) as it would go, but there seemed to be no change. As far as octane, I have tried everything from 87 to 94 and nothing really changes. It was cool here tonight, about 7C (39-40F), and I still am getting over 210F on the gauge. I think I'll splurge on a Dynojet kit. It certainly can't hurt. Perhaps it's just the nature of the beast, but I can't remember my last 1100 motor doing it at all.

Had the same problem on my 1100e then it start shooting oil out the pipe, took the head and some cheap looking head gasket busted between#2 and 3 cyl. Did a complete topend and oil cooler and she hasn't run hot or ping yet.

Might be something to that. I have an oil leak somewhere. It makes itself known on my left boot while riding. It's too high to be base gasket, but seems too low to be head gasket.

On another topic, I have found a Dynojet kit at Old Bike Barn, a 3133, but when I open the PDF file with the instructions, it says for US Models Only. Did US bikes get different carbs or something?

With pinging as you state here I'd raise the needle a half notch.

Mine also used to do that sometimes... The ignitor was on it's way out!

Doesn't seem to do it now even with the 87 with the Dyna S installed.

                        Hmm, something to consider.

Chef, how do you raise it 1/2 a notch? Do you shim it somehow?

Drop the clip on the needle one notch and put an extra washer over the clip plus the dynojet washer. I get the washers at Radio Shack.
If you don't have a notched needle you have to lose the plastic spacer over the clip. Stack washers until you have exactly the same amount of needle at the top as with the plastic spacer and remove one washer for a half step. Two washers = one notch.

gday guys, your talking octane in your fuel, in aus, we have 98, have you guys tried that, if its knocking on throttle, its not jetting, its ignition, or **** fuel, try some octane booster at least before you go dynajet, speaking of **** fuel, go to a differant garage, and try that fuel, the other place, could be watering it down, or have **** tanks, regards.

That's exactly what a lot of places around here do. Keep one tank of premium and dilute it whenever you want mid or low grade.
