    Good reason for Iridium Plugs

Here's a damned good reason to switch to NGK Iridium Plugs

Seriously though, I am in the process of routine checks and maintenance on the bike and decided to just spring for the NGK IX Iridium Plugs, I also had these on the GS650 which I sold in January. No, I did not expect any miraculous increases in power or performance, nor did I notice any http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tS4MV2pELyU

I have just fittet 2 iridium plugs in my GS425, and I actually feel that is has made my engine start much easier.
Before, it needed to turn the engine a couple of times before it would fire up, now I just have to touch the starter button, and it fires up instantly.

And it is not because the old plugs where trash... They looked fine when i changed them. I just changed because I got a good deal on the Iridium plugs.

Hasn't changed a bit on the performance though... But didn't expect it to do so...

More reliable spark, far less susceptible to fouling and lasts forever on non-racing type vehicles.

There is information circulating on the XS650 forum that Iridium plugs will give a 2Hp boost to that bike. Supposidley this was verified on a dyno using a stock engine and coils. Some of the more learned members dispute this, feeling that Iridium plugs will need coils capable of 30k volts or better to run optimally (stock XS coils are only good for 10K v).

I picked up a set a few weeks ago and installed them but haven't run the bike with them yet so can't say if there will be any improvement. My professional wrench tells me they won't make much of a performance difference and it is not worth the extra dollars to upgrade the coils.

The demonstrations on Ytube look convincing but I guess we are not getting the whole story.

For now I guess I'll run with plane Jane plugs. Cheaper anyway as Iridiums around here are $12 or more per.

        Anyone else with any experience?

        cheers,
        Andy

If a stock GS engine doesn't run perfectly on standard B8ES plugs, there's something else that is wrong.

Iridium plugs on our GS bikes are a total waste of money.

          Spyug, you have it right.

Sometimes the basics such as the coil voltage is overlooked and high performance coils or expensive plugs are seen as the solution. Grandpa is right there.

Iridium plugs will only last longer. Meaning that, you will get a better spark for a greater number of miles.

Or simply put, a brand new non-Iridium plug will perform just as good as a brand new Iridium on a dyno or going down the road. But after several thousand miles on each plug, the Iridium will start to out perform.

The video is well made, but unless she came with a box, I'll have to stick with the standard plug.

I am now also using Ir plugs on my 81' GS1100-16V with Dyna S, Dyna green coils and + supply directly from battery . It do giving different exhaust sounds from standard plug, Ir plugs giving better sounds that I like.
I used two time of this Ir plugs on my GS and each time was last more than 2 years with daily riding.

Over here most motor vehicle manuafacturers are still using standard plugs and these last for a full 15000 km's when using lead free fuel, and even then, they can just be cleaned as they do not show any burned bits like when the fuel had lead in it. Ok newer vehicles also have computer contolled timing, fuel flow etc. The question is how many standard sets of plugs can you buy for the price of a set of iridium's?
But everyone is free to make their own choice and fit what they feel good about!

My 850 chugged forever until i did the coil relay mod. Now she cranks once and catches every time. After that and the carb rebuild, even with just a bench sync, I don't even need the choke. Purrs along between 1200 and 1500 rpm at idle, as the spces say she should. NGK B8ES.

What is this 'coil relay mod' of which you speak?

Yeah, it convinced me that those plugs can transform any ordinary bike shop mechanic into a beautiful model for the video....ooohhhh...that wasn't the point?
