4 into 1 megaphone vs canister

What differences could I expect (on a 16 valve 1100 engine) when comparing a Vance and Hines megaphone to an older Vance and Hines canister like this one ?

That canister pipe was made AFTER the megaphone systems! Either way is a good choice. I thing the 1100s & 1150s look better & more period correct with megaphone systems. Ray.

Performance-wise, I would expect very little difference. They may sound slightly different, but that would be about it. The "megaphone" system is really a tapered core muffler, there is no true megaphone section in it.

I'm with Ray, the meg system looks better for the period styling of the bike.

          I appreciate the offer ..

I think I cannot avoid putting it on just to see how it sounds / looks ..

Aside from some decent stock pipes .. I also have collected a beat up V&H megaphone .. and a rough looking old Supertrapp.

Oh .. and some pods and a DJ kit for fun.

With the generous help of some more experienced wrench weilders .. I hope to let the playing begin :-D

where did you get that canister setup? Or was the canister added after the fact?

I've always liked the idea of this type of setup, just to have more options for replacement mufflers when the time comes.

Megaphone mufflers belong on our old bikes. They have the look, and the sound, that you just don't get with a new bike. :-D

I lucked into getting this with a bike I bought.

I will ask the seller when and where he got it.

He bought the bike new in 1981.

You don't need replacement mufflers with the canister system, you just repack when it blows out.

What do you pack them with .. stainless steel wool or fiberglass .. something like that ?

The traditional packing is a dense fiberglass mat, available from many dealers or on fleabay. Look for it in the dirt bike section, the current 4 stroke MX bikes eat packing quickly and the MX guys are regularly repacking cans (including me). I bought a pack of FMF packing for about $12 last fall at a local dealer. It would be more than enough to pack a complete street canister, maybe 2 depending on which system you have.

A lower maintenance option (for our street bikes) is to pack with stainless steel wool. It doesn't silence quite as effectively as the fiberglass, but it doesn't blow out, either. And the SS doesn't corrode very badly in the exhaust byproducts, for a long term solution. I know someone on the site has done this and posted a how-to thread, but I don't have it bookmarked. Search around and you should be able to find it.

I agree on anything 81 and older.

I think the 82 and up can sport either type and look good.

                            Kinda like this one ..
