you want the power wire coming straight off the battery, not from the starter...

some people will wire it to the starter cause it may be easier to put it on a post there.. but you want it going to the battery.

you will only get power at the starter post when you hold the start button....

Yep, just run a wire directly from the positive terminal of the battery to an inline fuse and then to terminal 30 on the relay. I picked up a Buss brand blade type holder with a fuse for about $5, it had a 30amp fuse which I replaced with 15amp and I think a 10amp would be fine.

I think your ground goes to 85 and the orange wire/s 86 with the wires to the coil + terminals coming from 87. I only used one orange wire and it works fine for me. The other is cable tied to a wire bundle.

      Hows it coming

Well I wired it to the battery this time same thing except for a loud backfire. Do my coils necessarily have to be bolted to my frame? Also I'm assuming to attach the wire to the positive terminal of the coil. Are you sure that's the right relay?

yes i do believe the coils need to be grounded to the frame....

okay I bolted the coils back up and no change. I used the multimeter and am getting voltage on 87 so something is wrong after that. 87 is simply split into a Y correct? 87 is split into a y with a wire going to each coils positive terminal. What the hell could be wrong now?

You're correct on the wiring. 87 goes to the positive terminal on each coil.

Double check to make sure you've got the right wires to the right plug. 1 to 1, 3 to 3. Make sure the signal wires are going to the correct coils too.

Could it be flooded? Pull a plug or three and check them out.

I'm going to kick myself if I switched the signal wires haha. Man I've been so stressed out because I just got it inspected and I'm waiting on a title mishap to be sorted out, and now I've killed it, and also gasoline/seafoam mixture didn't work out with my paint job so my tank is horrible looking now.

You all have inspired me to do the coil mod. as well. Everything is going well. I am using a Bosch relay but I am stuck. I have #85 to the ground, #30 to the battery, but I am not sure where to go next. On my bike the 1/4 coil has a orange/yellow wire and a white wire. The 2/3 coil has the same orange/yellow wire and a black/white wire. I printed out 2 sets of instructions but I am not sure how to hook up the last 2 connections. Which of these are the kill switch and which are the positive wiring to the coils? I was thinking I should wire the two orange/yellow together, but is that the switch or the power?
My instructions tell me to wire#86 to the kill switch and #87 to the positive wiring to the coils. As you may have figured out, I am no electrical genius. I was not lucky enough to have the 2 loose spade connectors. Mine has a 2 pronged plug going to each coil. One good thing though, they will not interchange so you can't plug them in to the wrong coil.
If someone can point me in the right direction I think I can get this buttoned up and ride tomorrow, if the weather is good.
                      Thanks for all replies.:-)

                        well your correct

wire 86 to the kill switch, thats gonna be the two orange and yellows that were once going to the coils....

and wire 87 to the coils... where the orange and white wires go into them...

that should do it. wire it up and give it a try!

Ahh. I think a light just came on. Now let me get this straight. I will put the two orange/yellow wires together that come out of the wire harness and connect them to #86. Then I will put the two orange/yellow wires that come from the coils, wire those together, and connect to #87 which would place this whole setup in between the original power supply to the coils.
                            Do I have this right?

yes! all your doing is stopping the power from going through the harness, and rerouting it straight from the battery...

                              now you got it

O.K. I am officially nuts now. I have # 85 to the ground, #86 to the kill switch,#87 to the coils. My relay has a #36 instead of #30, which I have to the power. Problem is there is no power to the coils with the key on and the kill switch in the run position. # 87A is hot all the time. What is going on here? What am I missing?:-?
