pipe change stock to straight pipes

i am new to this sight and have found so many informative info here but i have a problem ....i just replaced my exhaust mufflers with a set of straight pipes i cut them off at the welds after they come together and i didnt do anything to the carbs the problem i am having is i think i have a cylinder that has for a better lack of words dropped out at least it sounds like it . all the exhaust pipes are getting hot like they are firing but i have no idea ..... any help would be greatly apreciated

"Dropped out" as in, not firing?

If you opened up your exhaust system that much, you have created a huge lack of backpressure. You need to open up more airflow and rejet the carbs. You should also check your valve clearances as a lack of backpressure could accentuate a clearance problem. Possibly causing a cylinder to misfire, or not fire.

Take one plugs at a time and set it on the engine case (DON'T hold them with there with your hand). Turn the bike over with the starter. You should see a spark. Repeat this for all cylinders.

The bike may start up while doing this, so make sure its in neutral and you are ready to hit the kill switch.

If all have spark, your problem is elsewhere... but you definitely will need to rejet and mod the airflow now. Don't ride it like this, it will be way too lean.

Your new lack of backpressure has created more flow thru the motor. You need to richen it up a bit by rejetting the carbs. If you are adding PODS as well, you will REALLY need to rejet. I suggest finding a DynoJet kit for your bike, as otherwise, its a hit and miss guesswork kinda thing, that can involve alot of time and money and frustration.

Amazon sells K&N pod sets for $100, best deal you can get. I would get them, but I don't want the nightmare of rejetting, etc.

A compression gauge will only tell you the amount of pressure in the compression stroke. Backpressure comes into play when valves are open. I don't think they will help you solve that issue. However, it is good to know your compression readings, just in case. They will also tell you if a valve clearance is way too tight, but so will just measuring them all the normal way... which you should do anyway.

Goto DynoJet.com and look up your bike. BTW, what bike DO you have? At any rate, you'll find the kit for your bike, buy the stage 3 kit. Bout 130 bucks, and it will do all four carbs. It also has SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS for you to follow, as they usually do the math for you. It will get you VERY close, if not perfect on the first shot.

See a LOT of numbers thrown around. I think 6% to 8%, so on a 80 HP bike you might make it an 85 or 86 HP bike.

The jet kit alone, if installed on a STOCK bike, will do good things. Numbers are numbers, and they are subjective and whispy. What you WILL notice, is the total LACK of bog, hesitation or any other type of factory blahs in your bike. Adding the pods and pipe into the equation, and you've got just about all youre going to get out of her without SERIOUS mods and weight reduction. Provided of course that its JETTED correctly.

Elevatorman, listen to the CafeKid. He knows whereof he speaks. He's done a lot of tweaking, and regularly consults with some of the more learned gurus on the site. I don't know where in west Cincy you are, but unless you plan to open your bike up on the roads out in corntown, Indiana, the horsepower and torque of your bike in stock configuration should be enough to make you think about your mortality. Everyone wants more, more, more power, but ride safe so you can ride long.

Why have you chosen to put on a set of straight pipes?
