1168 piston kit
Hi guys, I am thinking about putting a 1168 piston kit in my 82 GS1100E. I was wondering if I can use the stock carbs, or will I have to to put 36mm carbs on my bike? Thanks!Tags: None

The stock airbox is usually swapped for K&N Cone Pod filters and a Dyno-Jet Stage III Kit is added with the addition of Vance & Hines 4-into-1 exhausts.
This really picks up the low end torque.

You could use the stock carbs if you wanted, but the Gixxer Mikuni 36's are way better from a throttle-response and performance standpoint. I am currently running 36 mm Mikunis (off a '94 RF900) with K&N pods & even without a big-bore kit etc, the difference is stunning.....the bike now would walk away from the stock-carbed version at any point, without effort. Be prepared for jetting issues, however, to get it right for your bike.
The search feature will get you plenty of info from others who have gone this route.

I went up to the GS1150 carbs. (36mm)
I also have oversized intake valves. It was no fun to jet but let others misery become your victory!1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.

Very streetable. The cams aren't too radical so it still has bottom end. I have them degreed in at 110 110.
I'm just now getting the needle circuit straight. I was running rich on it trying to compensate for a lean main jet. Now I have the needle straight but I can't get the main jet dialed in until I get my Pingel I just ordered. I'm getting fuel starvation in the bowls from my POS petcock. Getting a stutter at 9000.
Now that the needle circuit is dialed in it takes off like a SOB. I was messing with some newer bikes the other night and I ripped it and it almost pulled the bars out of my hands. It really suprised me! I'll have to hold on tighter from now on.
This bike is the ultimate sleeper. It's a L model with the sixteen valve motor. Has a sissy bar, saddle bags and a windshield. Newer bikes riders are quite suprised when I howl by them. I'm not saying my bike is new tech but it holds its own.1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.

I will have something close
but without all the head work. Mine is now:
1100 stock 72 mm pistons
1150 36 mm carbs
Web 0.340" lift
4:1 Yoshi header
Stage III Dyna jet kit
degreed for more low end at 105/107
Installing 1166 kit (75 mm pistons) coming soon.
Chef's bikes sound very similar except when Chef hits 6500 rpm, then it really rips (scary ). My roll on roll off is very smooth and the bike rides very nice. When it hits about 6000 it starts to rip as well but not the same way that his breathes. He is more into drag racing with 3 ft wheelies; I'm putting money into suspension.
We traded rides on and off on the Yosemite Trip.
