shim the cush drive

Anyone ever hear of this .. adding shims to take up some free play and reduces the lash you feel when applying and releasing throttle?

Not on a street bike. You could check to see if their worn out (not likely), but I wouldn't shim them. The shims might chew up the rubber and make things worse.
I would make sure the chain is adjusted correctly, the front sprocket nut is tight, and doesn't have damaged splines first.
Fwiw, I've noticed slightly less "lash" with the 530 conversion.

The place I saw this mentioned finding a thin silicone sheet (a cutting board .. wonder that should be safe enough to use without chewing up the cush rubber) ..

The cush pads were trashed on my 83 .. I swapped in some used ones (from a spare wheel) and noticed a big difference. Guess I should go on and order new replacement parts.


Oh well .. seemed like an interesting thought.

If their chewed up, then replacing 'em is really the only fix.
You must be really abusing that bike to kill the cush drive.

Nah .. I think Jethro beat them up before I got the bike. ..

The ones I put in look to be in good shape .. just a little bit of stress cracks ..

I should get new ones I suppose .. but again .. this seemed like a way to tighten up the slack a little bit .. even with new cush rubber.

No actually, I have nothing to do with his cush drive, or his riding pointers. Hope you got an older inner hub spline in that 850 of yours Captain Marvelous, or you'll find out soon enough.

I do. I also have a complete spare from an early model as well, Cupcake.

Good onya then, shouldnt have a problem. I have a couple myself, Grandpa tossed in with the GK (well ones ON the GK) worth their weight in gold..

I bought a Kawasaki ZX6 and it had a good 10-15 degrees of lash in the rear hub. Pulled off the cush hub and wrapped each rubber block with a couple rounds of bicycle inner tube. Stuffed everything back together and the lash was almost completely gone. Huge improvement. Not sure how long the inner tube will last since I sold the bike, but it was effective.

So the cush drive is part #15 on the Bike Bandit page but it's not clear if that is one big piece or multiple small ones? How many of those do I need to order?
