    will a 81 cv carb fit a 78

    hi,

Own a 78 gs750, put on open pods (K&N) but carbs are worn and ****ed up by previous owner.
Now I can get a original carb and a cv from a 81 for the same price
will this 81 cv fit on a 78?
Gonna put the K&N's on it, so the air box isn't a problem.

Nope - different carb altogether. How are your carbs sh*gged? They may be repairable + VMs for 750s are pretty cheap secondhand.

It could be made to work, but you would need the head from a 1980 or later 850 to do it...
Easier to fix what you have I bet.

Why would the head have to be changed? Why can't he change the manifolds to bigger ones from a different motor? Even Kawi manifolds if neccessary? Go measure the bolt spread center to center on your stock manifolds & I'll see if anything I have is the right spread. PM me back & let's see if we can make this happen. I absolutely LOVE it when someone says "It can't be done!" Ray.

look kz 1000 carb insulators or manifolds as some call them work nicely they are better for sealing to the head. kz or gs parts will work

3 different sizes to choose from. I had to elongate the holes on the set I use.
the only real problem is the fuel tap on the tank hits the carb top on #1 side.

CVs' are super for smoothness and get way better gas mileage. easy as pie to change over.

Suzuki increased the intake port size when they went to CV carbs so it's not just a matter of the rubber carb boots. No doubt it's possible to rig up some adapter of some sort but just getting the stock carbs sorted out is way easier.

It doesn't matter WHAT size the ports are! That can be fixed ON the bike with a Dremel in about an hour. Geez, you guys need to think about getting OUTSIDE the box once in awhile! Not only are the CVs easier to get parts for but he will see a power gain also! It is a no brainer for me. Ray.

I want to go with CVs because of the elevation changes where I mostly ride, (5,000'-14,000') So I just looked at two heads, a two valve (VM) 750 head and a later (CV) 850 head. They are identical other than the intake ports, and the shape of the castings around the ports. If you Dremel the 750 port until the port I.D. is the right size, there's only about an 1/8 inch edge left to seal the boot to, and the screw holes for the larger CV boots are as wide as the very edge of the screw boss on the 750 head. Not saying it can't be done, but it would take a lot of welding to increase the size of the screw boss, drill the new holes, and probably increase the outside of the port area, or find a new way to make the boot seal to the smaller casting on the VM head, as the O rings will be on the edge of the casting not on the flat surface.

Seems a heck of a lot easier to put on an 850 head, what, about an hour?

Actually, the original guy just wanted to avoid fixing his existing carbs. That sounds like the best idea.

                  Hi Guys,

                  Thanks for the replies.
I've looked at the cv carbs, but besides teh intake ports you also have the air filter problem.Especially when you just bought new K&N pods, wich don't fit the cv's
Anyhow, just bought a very nice original carb, It will do the trick.

                  Thanks
