Canister .. Yosh, VH or Supertrapp

I love the sound and looks of my stock pipes on my 1983 GS1100E

But, I have wanted to try a header for a while (even if only temporary)..


I have three different 4 into 1 headers to pick from ..

Yosh 4 into 1

Vance and Hines 4 into 1

Supertrapp 4 into 1


Any opinions on which one should I use ?

If it were me I'd go with the Yosh. Yosh and Suzuki go together like peaches and cream.

I have a V&H on my '80 1100 right now and a supertrapp will arrive tomorrow. I'll try and shoot a video and post it to youtube to compare the difference. Will keep you posted.

Is your Yosh the vintage (80's) system, or a modern canister adapted to the header? The older style are pretty rare any more. I'm thinking, if I ever need another system, with the prices of the available new 4X1's as high as they are, I will just get a modern (oval) Yosh can and adapt it to fit, like the can on Billy Rick's sharp GS700.
+ 1 for the Yosh, BTW......the V&H megaphone type sounds good too, but IMHO the meg shoulda been about 3 or 4 inches longer, so they end up closer to the rear of the bike.....at least on the 1100.

The problem with the new canisters is they're either bolt on or 2" inlet. I need 2.5" inlet to fit my Kerker. Do you guys just use some exhaust adapters to go from one to the other? What does this do for flow, and how would you make it look decent?

A 2.5" to 2" reducer would hardly be noticeable on the end of the header and would do diddly to flow, since the muffler is the major bottleneck.

To TS, I vote Yosh. You can't really put anything else on a Suzuki if its available, can you? And they have such a lovely howl, not at all like a Kerker or Supertrapp.

The can isn't all that old, probably the series that came out just before the RS3 series. It should clean up nicely and the can will polish out.

I wouldn't say they are a "better" choice. They do allow you to adjust the flow through the muffler, but typically they end up quite loud by the time you have enough discs stacked on to flow decently. One way to improve the flow is to remove the inner lip on the discs with a lathe. You chuck a stack of discs in and just turn the lip off.

If you are simply looking for an OEM exhaust replacement and don't want to re-jet, then they will work OK as you just set the disc stack to mimic the stock flow level. As a performance exhaust they would be middle of the road at best, on par with the Kerker and V&H products.

I have never been a huge fan of the sound they produce, either, but they are a quality product that lasts. Just not really high performance or better than any other pipe.

I still vote for the Yosh pipe.
