    Don't shoot me for thinking about this.....

    ....but just wondering if it's possible to put one of them "soup up" car mufflers on a bike. They have the 2.5" inlet I'm looking for, and they're not really any bigger than the usual Yosh or Hindle modern pipes. I even found one that's 3.5" around, so it's not TOO huge. They come with the silencer inserts, so you can get some back pressure.

    Anyone? Anyone?

      Are you talking about those things I see on
      the "Bros" Honda civics? IMO I would
      not bother because I think they sound lousy.
      But if you like the sound its your bike, go for it...

        you see them sometimes on bobbers and customs...sometimes they are cool....other times not...mostly depends on how ya hang em.

          That sound is also due to the full exhaust systems used on most cars. I had an 86 Golf that I had to replace the whole system back of the header for cheap. To do that, the muffler shop replaced two "pre-mufflers" or resonance chambers with straight pipe and used a typical replacement muffler only. After the work, it had the same tinny exhaust note you hear on the imports running the stupid big cans, only quieter. The stock resonance chambers were killing that sound and removing them brought it back.

          So I don't think a bike with its high revs and short overall exhaust system will sound anything like your typical import, even though the muffler is the same. I say go for it.

            I had considered doing it when I was looking for a can to go with the Duplex header I got off Ebay. I ended up going with a carbon RS-3 can instead. I did buy a stainless oval shaped can off Ebay but it was too big once I received it. I still have it, maybe one of these days someone will need a muffler for their car or truck so I've hung onto it.

              Long ago, when I was a penniless college student, I had a KZ650. The V&H muffler fell off and destroyed itself on a lonely back road.

              So a couple off days later, I hit AutoZone for a bright red Cherry Bomb glass pack, an adapter, and an assortment of clamps.

              It looked really goofy, but it worked great for a couple of years and didn't actually sound half bad.

              In other words, give it a try. If you don't like it, sell the muffler to some ricer kid.

                Lol! You guys are great! I'll definitely look into it, as these new, cheap mufflers are easy to find and are built basically the same as a lot of the generic bike cans. Straight through and glass pack. It may be a while before I find one that I like though.

                Don't really like the prices of the RS-3's, but do like the looks of them. Basically, my requirements are firstly size, then price. I don't want some monster 24" long, 6" diameter cannon hanging off the side of my bike. I only want to sweep it up a few degrees, not the usual sportbike 45 degrees. So it has to be shorter to look right.

                Was thinking I could do a little modifying to the bolt-in silencer, and cut the crappy angle cut tip off straight.

                This one lists it as a detachable silencer, which is what I'd want.



                Prices are basically the same across the board on the cheapie ones, as the shipping makes up for any lower buy it now prices. Still not a terribly high cost for a muffler.

                  Well, the first one you list must be close to 5" OD since it lists the outlet at 3.5" diameter and the second one doesn't say that I could see, so you may want to keep looking. I also like how the first listing says it is a titanium muffler, but is made from 304 stainless steel...

                  On the sound front, a short, fat muffler is more effective than a longer, smaller OD one. It's probably not a big issue for you, but I thought I would mention it.

                  Overall, I like the looks of the first one, but it will probably look really big on the bike.

                      I don't know if this is an option for you but couldn't you whip something up? I believe I have seen some custom made muffs on my jaunts around the net. Sorry I can't point you to anything specifically but i've seen them. Basically, a center tube (muffler pipe from Crappy tire) drilled out along the length. Wrap in fiberglass batting insert into an aluminum/carbon fiber/fiberglass tube with aluminum caps at either end. Might be a titch loud but should work and likely cheaper than store bought. Mind you Cherry Bombs bring back memories so that might be the way to go.

                        Spyug, believe me, I've considered that already. I have a roomie that runs a laser and cuts stainless for me for odds and ends. Could easily get him to cut the stuff out, and his brother TIG welds. Manufacture is not the problem, and may not even be out of the picture yet, as it would end up being EXACTLY what I want. But, that's a whole lot of work, and a fair amount of costs.

                        I'd want a stainless or aluminum muffler. No galvanized exhaust pipe from C.T., it rusts in no time once you start putting holes in it, like the one I built for my car back in the day. Don't know if I want to dedicate 3 or 4 weeks to a muffler in the design and fab department, only to end up with something pretty much the same as what I could have bought. I know, I know, satisfaction of a job done by yourself.

                        I'll keep looking around though. Thanks for all your comments folks.
