550 Clutch upgrade
I have an 80 550E with 4-1 pods and DJ kit. That's it, but my stock clutch is starting to go. I have replaced the cable and adjusted per the factory, but it still slips at high RPM. What is the best setup to run on the street?

I think I'd replace the plates. Even though you've made those changes, the stock 550 clutch can take way more horses (significantly over-engineered) so something is worn out down there.
If you want to replace the springs though I've used EBC and they've been fine.79 GS1000S

I run a GS750 clutch in my 79 550. You want the inner basket and plates. This will add a couple plates to your clutch. I did this swap on mine back in 1980 so the details are not fresh on my mind.

Clutch plates are the same for the 550 and 750. 550 takes 7 plates, not sure about the 750.
Measure the thickness of the fiber plates, if they meet the spec in the service manual, you will gain nothing by changing them.
I have a used set of clutch plates that measure up to the new part thickness spec. The standard is 2.9 - 3.1 mm, with a service limit of 2.6 mm. My plates all measure 3.0 - 3.1 mm. I have them listed in the Parts For Sale forum for $25 + shipping. Drop me a PM if interested. Order up some new stock springs and you will be good to go.Last edited by Nessism; 09-19-2008, 09:17 AM.Ed

buy a complete set of EBC clutch springs and measure the fiber plates.
sometimes you can put in new clutch springs and be ok for another couple thousand miles. however this is a wearable part of the drivetrain so expect to put in a set of fiber plates -after soaking in oil overnight.
gasket too if you cannot save the old one.
I use ebc because they come from parts unlimited and thy are like $8.00 for a set of springs and fibers are like $60.00 a set, but any brand is ok. barnett, vesrah,K&L,Gen.Suzuki, etc...SUZUKI , There is no substitute
