    Damn you, damn yoooooooooooou!

Now I'm thinking of jumping into the EFI rabbit hole on the GS1000 for better mileage and performance, especially at high altitude.

Keep us posted on this project, lots of pics and instructions...

Trick idea, clever & interesting but imo as much use as a paper fireguard on a gs

I'll explain that a little if i may..... for me the gs range is about simplicity fun & reliability, anything thats added which could take away from those core points detracts from the bike imo, not being able to fix it (or at least attempt to) at the side of the road, camping field, or local car park meet means to me you have taken a perfectly good bike & removed the whole reason for riding one

      good luck with it anyway

For me a GS1000 has about as much power at 12,000ft elevation as a good Sears mini-bike. I have the carbs set lean at 5,000ft where I live, it runs fine if underpowered at 7-8,000, and above that it's a wimp, can't open the throttle much at all or it dogs out, really a pain in the butt to get up these mountains.

Anything I can do to get some torque up there is badly needed, FI is the first step towards turbocharging.

Life is too short to ride an L.

            That explains a lot

Thought about hanging a blower off the side instead ? less complication & forced induction directly related to crank speed

I can confirm that the 1000ENs still had points, and mine definitely doesn't have a kickstarter.

I'll be watching this thread; I was just thinking the other day that I'd use the GS as a test bed to learn the megasquirt before I do more tinkering on my MR2.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but does anyone know if any of the following throttle bodies will fit right up to a '81 GS850?

                  05-06 KAWASAKI ZX6R (Ninja i think?)
                  07-08 KAWASAKI ZX6R
                  06 07 SUZUKI GSXR 600 750

                  04 Kawasaki ZX 636

                  Thanks much.

                    No.
                    No.
                    No.
                    And No.

The only bodies that will fit right up are the GPZ1100s, and only a certain run of them.

Will any of those work with some effort? I found 1 set of GPZ1000s on ebay and they're $400.......... I think I ready that someone managed to put some GSXR600s on a GS1100 with a bit of elbow grease. Is the spacing on the 850 and 1100 much different?

Spacing shouldn't be much different, if at all. You may have to switch some boots around, but you could probably get them to fit, but you'll definitely need new boots as your old ones are probably not flexible enough to jame the TBs in there.

The answer to this question is this:

Probably all of them will fit, but not all of them will fit right in.

With projects like this one (which is intriguing to me) you might be able to use a lot of different things for a starting point...the process of making all the parts work together might be where the real work comes into play.

                          Good luck!!

No offense, but what is it that you are trying to accomplish? While an 850 is a great bike the added aggravation of adapting fuel injection to your existing intake setup won't really make it any better. Check into a Dynojet kit, pods, and a header. You won't get any better than that.

What do you define as better? I'm also working on a fuel injection setup, and if done correctly it can run better than even the most perfectly tuned carb setup and it'll gain a little power in the process.

Even before I read this thread I had been thinking about a long term proj that would be a gs1000 with gsxr1000 throttle bodies... Haven't done anything more than the "dreaming" part of the build, but it's exciting to think about.
