    530 chains for gsxr wheel swap

    i'm running a 5/8" 530 offset front sprocket and fancy rear from katman on my 80 gs1000e with 90s gsxr wheels and 180 rear tire. the chain i picked up from him is a fancy ek x-ring which is way too wide to clear everything. with the chain lined up using an alignment tool it rubs the shocks, tire, and frame. at about 25mm wide pin-to-pin it is nearly as wide as the stock 630. i have called rk, did, and ek. their non o-ring chains still run in the neighborhood. of 22-23mm. i picked up a cheapie parts unlimited standard chain of unknown tensile strength which measures at 20mm wide and fits ok only ticking the frame.

    the question is: what chain is everyone else out there running? in retrospect i should have gone with a 520 set up. but i didn't.

    any help would be appreciated.

    i should also mention the wheel spacing is dead nuts with the sprockets aligned.

    I'm using a DID ERV3 520 chain which measures 18.6 mm wide. No frame clearance issues this way with a 5/8" offset front sprocket and a 180 rear tire, same bike as you with a '80 GS1000E.

      I'm running a 520 standard non O-ring with a bit of a notch in the frame and have no clearance issues.

      The 520 O-ring unit is a bit wider. Are you using the O-ringer on your bike 80GS1000?

        Yes, the DID 520ERV3 is a "X"-ring chain. http://www.didchain.com/xring1.htm

          i'm seeing a pattern here. looks like i might have to go with a 520 setup whether i want to or not.

            strange this, i run a gsxr rear wheel with a 180 rear tyre, offset front sprocket and a 530 chain. ok the chain just clears the frame but not really any problems. its not an x ring chain.
            1978 GS1085.

            Just remember, an opinion without 3.14 is just an onion!

              any idea where the chain came from? the off brand chain i have clears enough i'm just nervous running it. how long have you been running it? it may be my best option i just have terrible visions of snapping the thing on take off.

                    As mentioned a lot of times before ive done quite a few 5.5" wheel swaps on gs's & never had a problem using 530 chains, but having said that i dont use a 5/8 ofset front sprocket either (too much ofsett)

                      I don't have as tight of clearances as you, but I run DID 520 roller chains with are exactly 17m wide.

                        I started out with a 530 conversion with 5/8 offset and ended up going with a 520 set up. It solves a lot of issues as you can see from the pic. It clears the wheel, the shock and most importantly no gauging of the frame.
                        The pic below is a 5/8 offset with a Gold DID 520 ERV3, stock GS carrier, b12 swingarm and a Pirelli 180

                            I'm running a Bandit rear, and I didn't have to use any custom spacers. Just the stock GS sprocket carrier.

                              I had trouble clearing the Ohlins, because the spring is longer than the stock GS shocks, everything had to move 2mm over to allow for chain clearance.
