    1150 rear spring swap

hello everybody, especialy the 1150 riders who cant afford an expensive rear shock, but are fed up with the wallowing that happens with a worn out spring . what i did was buy a busa shock from ebay and simply swap the spring into the 1150 . it all fits fine the inside diamiters and length are the same on both shocks.
the bike is getting a full cosmetic rebuild so as soon as it is on the road i will up date with more info on the performance aspects
    bye for now .........toolman

Just so you know, when an 1150 gets mushy in the rear it is most likely the SHOCK has gone away, NOT the spring. Ray.

Not true Ray I had my rear shock re-built by Frank Pons (used to be Wayne Rainey's suspension tech) whilst it is true the shocks damping had well and truly "gone away" the spring is sagged by 30mm with the shock installed, BTW there is a second 1150 in town (Tractor replica in fact) with exactly the same experience.

What's the spring rate for the 'Busa vs. the 1150?

uncle mike . the swap was a success, the bike has never handled so good giving me much more confidince in spirited riding . now you can throw it in to a corner and it feels great.it also handles two up very well. before it was awfull with a passenger now its great hardly notice the extra weight .
my personal preferance with suspention is i like it stiff. witch may not be to your liking but if it is its a inexpensive mod and it works well .

So all you did was swap out the 'busa spring onto the OEM 1150 shock? You didn't rebuild the shock?

yes its that easy, swap out the spring. the shock it self cant be rebuilt. i was lucky i had a low mile unit that came with the bike.
i did have to set the preload up to get rid of a bounce but other than that just swap the spring
the only other thing you have to do is remove the dampening cable to get the spring out, dont lose the plastic gear inside .

Was the 'busa shock different enough that you couldn't just use the whole thing? Mounts wrong?

uncle mike:the busa shock has a resevour attached and is phisicaly too big to mount easily. if i had extra suspesion pieces i would have moded the thing in but i didnt want to mod somthing and it not work leaving me with no ride .
this winter if i can find some extra pieces i might try to fit the busa shock but for now the spring swap works ok.
as i am putting more miles on i am noticing the rebound dampening is a bit off, too light for the spring .thats the only bad thing i have to report.

There is a Ducati Monster 900 shock that should fit. Has 20 stage adjustable damping. I just bought one for the 750.. Not sure about spring rate as yet but I know the shock body is right. I intend to get a Busa spring for it if it needs a bit more.

I've heard of guys installing the shocks upside down to accommodate the reservoir.

saltymonk: the up side down thing would work but its awfully close to the road and all the things that live there, rocks and the like.if i had an extra suspension i would fab it in and see.
i did read about the monster shock being the rite size and configuration but the monster dosent weigh anything like the 1150 .you should check and see if the spring would fit .
if it did would you find the same problem with overpowering the rebound dampening even at its higher setting .i am shure the monster weighs much less.

I am running it on a 750 so we will see... I'll feed back. I don't believe it will need anything like full damping for the spring it has on there (20 stage adjustment) so I think it could handle a stiffer spring ok...

saltymonk: i would like to know how it works. keep us updated on your progress if it works good on your 750 it should work on the 1150.
would love to clear up this problem as there are lots of these bikes out there and many of them have the rear suspension issues .
