My rear brake caliper is up topside like stock. '89 1100 gsxr caliper bracket. And an early 90's 600 katana caliper, I had a 600 wheel on it up till this month. Homemade torque arm, I cut the ends off the stock arm and welded them to a piece of round (1/2 inch O.D. I think) tubing. Had to bend it slightly when I installed the new wheel.

Dee touched on one detail I missed. I had to bend the torque arm to clear the sidewall.

Well..... I made a choice. Got a good deal on a GSXR 1100 front end complete with brakes, rotors & 17" wheel conversion.
I've had a measure up & I will lose about 1" clearance over stock giving me about 4.5", maybe 4" with sag.

Going to get the clutch back in it & fire it up to make sure all nasty noises go away before I try to mount it up...

Couple of problems - Rear wheel is a 5.5" - has a 170 mounted on it... Reckon it will fit (or can I mount a 160 on that wheel?) If not I guess I'll trade it for a 4.5", sure there are lots of GSXR guys looking to trade up.....

Rear brakes - I have a rotor, that's it... guess I'll have to look into that. Dee - what rotor did you use with your setup?

Gauges... not yet had a good look to figure out whether the GSXR wheel has some kind of output or whether I have to look into something else for this....

If the wheel is going on the 750 I don't think you'll get a 170 in there and have any room left. My 160 leaves about 1/4" on each side of the swingarm. The speedo should drive off the front wheel unless it's fairly new. What year is it?

Guess I'll have to figure out what year wheel it is... I think it's somewhere in the early 90's but there must be a manufacturer date on it. Not really had chance for a good look as yet.

Will have to hunt on the Avon site for wheel to tyre sizes... I have a 140 in there at the moment, already looks a bit tight. Any need for offset sprockets or similar?

                  just to chime in......

When I was putting my custom sized wheel spacers into my stock rear swinger, I used an inner wheel bearing spacer cut down to the sizes I needed using a band saw. this allowed me to line up my sprockets.

my 2 cents worth is mostly for the rear caliper hanger.....

whatever spacers you end up using for the rear wheel, make sure you use the EXACT spacer/hanger that goes with the wheel you're using! I originally used my stock 550EF spacer and hanger as the hangers were the same on my 550EF and the Katana 600 rear wheel I chose. However, the spacer between the wheel and hanger were slightly different and my 550EF spacer did NOT line my caliper up with the rotor exactly. I didn't notice until I test drove it and when I put it back up on the center stand and spun the wheel, the wheel wouldn't move! I had to take it all apart and use the Katana spacer which allowed the brake system to line up perfectly

slight intolerances can cause BIG problems!!! i recommend using good measuring devices to get the proper measurements. don't rely on the "eyeball" method......I used a tape measure to make sure my front and rear sprockets lined up, then measured the spaces on either side of the rear swinger to get proper widths for my spacers.

                  Happy mods

The wheel size will be cast into it on the sprocket side. You can fit a 160 in the stock swingarm if we're talking about the 750.

It's the 5.5" rear wheel... guess I'll have to switch that for a 4.5" as it looks like it's too wide for a 160. Should be plenty of 4.5" about in the same style.

One interesting thing I found out today... with the 17" conversion on the 1100 front end you have to be a little "inventive" to get the front wheel off. I will adjust when I eventually get it all fitted up to make that procedure a little easier.

Wheels are 89/90 GSXR. It *looks* like the GS speedo drive might fit the hub... (maybe need boring to axle size..) the GSXR drive needs a different fitting.

If I could find a cheap centre stand & get this clutch sorted out I could really get started!

                          Billy,

That would be fantastic. I want to let you know that this will not be a "rush job" though. (New baby arriving in July). I may need it for a year...

Of course I can always take it back off again somehow & send it to you & will keep searching for an alternative meantime. It will at least let me get started proper!

                          Cheers,

If I need to get the wheels off the ground I have a swingarm stand with an attachment for the front so I can live without it for a while. If I see any on Ebay in the meantime I'll let you know.

Up front I ran into a couple of problems to deal with. First was the upper stem bearing. The CBR uses a larger bearing so I was going to have to either alter the neck of come up with a bearing. Someone here had posted a link to a bearing that fits the bill but the link I have is dead. None of the local bearing shops could help. The inner diameter of my stock bearing was too small to fit the stem. I tried a couple of machine shops here but they wouldn't touch the bearing. I came home and took my dremel to it with one of the barrel sander attachments and got it to where I needed it. The dremel barely cuts the bearing so you don't have to worry about taking too much material off. It probably took me 15 minutes working my way around the bearing before I got a snug fit on the stem. You just have to be careful and keep the dremel planted flush on the bearing.
Hi Salty Monk and Billy Ricks,

I think I can help you with details on the needed bearings. I too have purchased a Honda 954 tripple to get the additional 1" of ground clearance.

This was recommended to me by katman for my 954 triple.

The gs bearings will not fit this stem. My 2002 954 triple came with bearings that fit the gs but I see yours are ball bearings so you will need to buy the ones below.
                              Here are the bearings

Were those sealed ball bearings or tapered? My 954 triple used tapered bearings. The lower bearing was fine but the upper 954 bearing was too big to fit the GS neck. I couldn't find a bearing to use to make it work at the time so I took my GS bearing and increased the id to fit the 954 triple. I couldn't get any local machine shops to touch it so I came home and took my dremel to it with a drum sanding attachment. With the steel being so hard on the bearing there was no danger of taking too much metal off at one time so I just worked the dremel around the bearing and kept checking it until it fit snugly on the stem.
