    GS1100GL - 10 or 20 more horsepower?

    I was thinking about staying in the GS family after welling my 850L but was curious.... I was curious about how one would go about getting a noticable amount of power out of a liter+ GL. With bolt ons preferably. Also, as a side note, anyone know why in '80 the GS1000GL had 22 litre fuel capacity but it dropped to 17 on the '81 GS1100GL?

    The guy I bought my '83 from put individual POD air filters on and rejetted and claimed gains like that. I'm not enough of an expert to know if he was right or not. Feels pretty strong to me. I can't figure the smaller tank either. Since this model is supposed to be a "cruiser" seems like it would have one of the larger tanks.

      Does your 1100 run correctly now? They are supposed to be rockets already. If your isn't, fix it.
      As with all things on the L models, it's all about someone's idea of style. Someone at Suzuki must have thought they looked cooler with the tiny tank.

        About the gas tank. I beleive the tank from the standard G will fit on the L model giving you more fuel capacity. Can anyone confirm tank compatibility between the L and G tanks?

          Looking at the parts fiche here http://alpha-sports.com/suzuki_parts.htm the parts numbers are different. Who knows, they might.

            No, they are not interchangeable. The G tank is longer. The G/GL seats are not interchangeable either -- the frames are significantly different.

            Of course, anything's possible with a welder and enough explosives...

            In the end, it's easier to just stop a little more often.


            Back to the original point, make very sure that the bike is running like it's supposed to before you decide you're unhappy with its performance and start changing stuff. It's a good rule of thumb with any 25 year old machine. I've never heard anyone gripe that their 1100G/GL is too slow. Heavy, yes. Slow, no. It's not a new Bandit or FJR, but it's pretty dang powerful.

            Also, don't be afraid to spin the thing -- there's a nice rush in the powerband at about 5,500 - 6,000 rpm on up. Visit redline often.

                Brian as usual is correct, if you spin the 1000 or 1100 two valve motors and even if you don't, they will both definately haul some a**. Actually the 1000 motor has a bit higher OEM compression and 90 hp from what I have seen. The 1100 motor has slightly lower compression and 94 hp. Weight is virtually the same. I set each of mine up differently but if you are looking for straight HP I would go with an 80 or 81 1100GL (hard to find) which was a chain drive L with the four valve motor and that would be the fastest L model as far as I know. If you are looking at the two valve shaft drive models I am probably more partial to my 1000. If you do get one of the above bikes I would suggest doing the airbox boots (both sides) o-rings, carb o-ring kit, Progressive mods (front & back), rebuild all your calipers (stainless front lines at least) and change to sticky tires before even starting on the motor. More HP is worthless without the capability of stopping or cornering IMHO.

                  The 16V is just an L not a GL (i.e. GS1100L)
                  apparently the GS750L (same vintage) is also a 16V

                    My bad, guess I am stuck on the GL's. Not sure why.

                        1983 GS 1100E w/ 1230 kit, .340 lift Web Cams, Ape heavy duty valve springs, 83 1100 head with 1.5mm oversized SS intake valves, 1150 crank, Vance and Hines 1150 SuperHub, Star Racing high volume oil pump gears, 36mm carebs Dynojet stage 3 jet kit, Posplayr's SSPB, Progressive rear shocks and fork springs, Dyna 2000, Dynatek green coils and Vance & Hines 4-1 exhaust.
                        1985 GS1150ES stock with 85 Red E bodywork.

                          Yea, but is it for sale?

                          If I look closely I can see some scrapes on the foot pegs?

                          That 1100L has almost +40 hp over a stock 1100g

                          It's got some gitty-up; ask me how I know?
