    82 gs650 G

    I have a gs650 g, Prev. owner thought it would be a good Idea to cut the air box out. I got it for free. It starts revs the stalls. I thought it was to lean I bought pods for it to reduce the air and it still does the same thing. With the stock Jets should it idle. Has anyone set up a bike in this fashion?
    how should I jet? They say 25% upjet but what jets should I get?
    Any help would be great.

    The easiest way to get it to run right would be to find the proper airbox. Pop it on with a good filter and you are done.

    Harder is to buy good pods (K&N) and a jet kit, this will still take a lot of trial and error and it may never run perfectly.

    Third and hardest way is to do all the jetting on your own, it takes a lot of tedious work and testing but in the end you will have a pretty good working knowledge of how your carbs work.

    Me, I'd find the airbox.

      Sounds like the carbs may not be getting enough gas. If it was just a lean air condition it would at least idle with choke on. Is the petcock flowing gas properly? Is there an inline fuel filter that could be clogged. Make sure of fuel flow to carbs. If it still doesnt at least idle tear into the carbs and clean them. Most bikes will run with just pods.. just lean.

        Make sure there clean and working. Then go pods, pipe and stage 3 jet kit to get you in the ballpark. your in 300-400 bucks for a fun bike.

          Running the bike lean like that, if it will run decently at all, will likely damage the engine. GS engines are tough but holed pistons and burned valves do occur.

          I agree with the find a good used airbox approach.

            Stock the bike is lean out of the factory. I wouldn't want to run like that. Do it all or go back to the air box and you want worry about rain in your pods either.

              What i was trying to say is the bike will run and idle with pods or no airbox at all.. His issue is not the airbox or pods. It is a fuel delivery problem. either not getting fuel to the carbs, or the carbs are clogged. I would never suggest running pods on stock bike without rejetting or at least restricting the pods to richen up the air fuel mixture. Figure out why it is not even idling or running before searching for an airbox. I run pods on my bobber, but it is jetted on the rich side, so much so that if it idles too long, it will foul the plugs, but on top end it runs great. Actually a lot of the older bikes will run with pods and stock exhaust. My 80 xs 400 did fine with stock jetting and pods, my 80 kz 1000 ran fine, my 74 xs 650 did also. I just kept on eye on the pipes and plugs. Never had a problem with any of them. Sold 2 of those bikes to friends and they are still riding them as i sold them to them with pods, stock jetting and factory exhaust. You will run into more trouble with a free flowing exhaust and pods.

                I will check into the fuel situation.

                I will check into the fuel situation. The thought of going to stock air box does not work. I have the pods and they are installed and the cost of finding a stock airbox and all the bits is not worth it. Like I said the bike was free and I will cafe it with custom seat and tank. Thatr comes later after it runs well. It looks like i might need to take the carbs off and give them a good cleaning. Have you installed the dynojet carbs for this bike? I wouold like to hear from you.

                  figure out your carbs.. Then the best thing would be after cleaning the carbs see how it runs with pods. If the pipes are blueing or your plugs are too white, your running lean. Step up to the next higher main jet, or put a foam sock over the existing pods to richen up the a/f mixture. If you sock over ypur existing pods your in effect choking the a/f mixture, or slowing it down, which is what the airbox does. if it back pops during deacceleration, your lean. If not it is most likely fine. Just keep ane eye on your pipes and plugs. Like i said above , have never burnt a valve or holed a piston from not running the airbox. but i'm careful

                    Mine wouldnt. Wouldnt hardly even fire enough to produce any exhaust.
                    Cleaned carbs, rejetted and it runs fine with or without the K&N's.
