    A little electronic box....

I was out riding with another guy on a '77 GS750. He had bought it as it was, slightly modded with a GSX alloy swing arm, front end and wheels, but original motor with header and cheap nasty pods. I took a ride on it and aside from some problems with warming up and what not cause he is still running the original jets (100) the bike was easily quicker than mine. I am only missing the pods, but I didn't think that could really explain the difference between the bikes. The throttle response on his bike was much quicker, in fact exactly the way I would like mine to be.

When I asked him about it he said that there was a little box that sat under his seat that controlled the ignition timing on the bike. It it roughly 2" by about 3½" long and has little cooling fins on it. He said it is what makes his throttle quicker.

Does anyone know what it is?

    Cheers

Most likely his engine is correctly tuned for the pipe and pods, and your is not tuned for the pipe. Huge difference.
What's the thing under the seat called?

Life is too short to ride an L.

did he let you look at the box?
sound like its is tuned right and hes just feeding you BS to make you think he has more done to the bike them what really has been done.
buy some pods and jets and tune it all. then you should feel more power. and maybe smoke him and his lil box.

To start with I want to say I am sorry that this is all so vague. It is like saying 'You remember that film with that guy in it that had that car...'

          Thank you for your patience...

That is the thing. He had it explained to him my some mechanics. Saying that it made the timing more 'effective', no idea what it is called...

It wasn't BS, I saw the box. I asked a mechanic friend of mine about it and she started refering to stuff that I didn't understand and can't translate, but if I was to sum up what I understood of what she said it sounded like it replaced the mechanical timing of the engine and made it electronic. From what I have read it sounds like a lot can be done for the power output of you engine if you just tweak the timing in it, as in retarded vs advanced. but you guys know more than I do about stuff like that

I have heard his bike run and it takes no less than 10 minutes to warm it up before it is ready to ride, and I know he is running the original jets. At idle the pipes in the header aren't even the same temperature, it is only once you start riding that they all come up on hot. So it needs some serious work, but inspite of that the engine whips up when you rev it at the lights and the acceleration is much better than mine. If that is just because of the pods (no jetting change) than I can only look forward with glee to the arrival of mine. Can that difference I have noticed really be those 3-4 extra hp that people say you get with pods?

It is that kind of thing we are talking about. It isn't identical, but pretty close.

I think it is something like this....

Motorcycle electronic / contactless ignition kits by Newtronics - improve fuel consumption, power, starting, running - reduce costs, maintenance, pollution.

It seems to fit the description that I have in my head the most...
