    GS1150 Head & Carb Swap Onto a 16V GSX1100ET

    Hi!
Would the installation of a GS1150 head along with the associated carbs onto the top of a 1980 GSX1100ET engine block be a plug and play type of swap? Would this comprise more than swapping the heads? If so, what else is involved to do this type of modification? Would the GS1150 airbox fit inside the GSX1100ET frame? If not, could the GSX1100ET airbox do?
    TIA!

The 1150 head & carbs will go right into your 1100 & you will still be able to use the 1100 airbox. The only thing you will HAVE to do is change the stock 1100 cylinder studs to 1150 studs & you can get the heavy duty 1150 studs from APE for about 80 bucks. I specialize in these motors & will be glad to help you if you need. Call me at 714-356-7845 if you ever need parts or help. Ray.

That's great news! Thanks for the offer. I'll certainly keep this in mind.

No I didn't. Thanks for the "heads up"!

          for the record..
you should change the shifter shaft and sprocket cover depending on the year 1100 your using.
electronic tach or shift light would get the revs in order.

***ok i just seen an 80 model 1100 was to be used.
you dont have to change the shaft and cover unless you want to.***

          WTF was i thinking...
i thought this was a motor swap thread...
          OOOOOOOOOPS!
pardon my re tar ded ness

If I wanted to keep the 1980 gauges (tach and speedo), would this be possible with the 1150 head? Could a modification be done by a machinist in order to permit using the OEM cable driven tach?
            Thanks!

You would have to substitute a GS1100 exhaust cam (partially fefeats the purpose of making the change) or an after market cam like Web or Cam Motion that comes with a gear drive on it (most do). The hard part is going to be grafting on the cable receptacle on the outside of the GS1150 cover. Hopefully someone else has info on how/if this can be done.
Way too much effort for what's gained. Replace the tach with an electronic one and be done with it. If you're modding the bike anyway, why the need to stick to an original tach?

... because I'd like to keep the bike's same general appearance (square headlight with gauge cluster, etc.).
Thanks for the insight. It is very appreciated.

OK thanks. Gotta think about this one for a while. Do I use a GS1150 head and lose the gauge cluster, or have the GS1100 head modified and keep the cluster ...

I can do an 1100 head for you & put bigger valves in it to accomplish the same in performance gain without you having to modify other things. Let me know if I can help. I build LOTS of these engines! Ray.
