Looks like a nice engine if you live in Missouri; dude wants $200 to ship.

How can you tell? It looks like a real crap shoot to me. Better be prepared for almost anything if bidding.
What would be a fair price to purchase something like this? I have a 79 1000 and could benefit from having a spare engine and would consider it if only I knew what to expect.

Just guessing it's in good shape based on the cosmetic condition and the fact that the guy says it has 4000 miles on it. Could be a POS, hard to say.

If I was in the market for a used engine I'd take my chances on it assuming the guy give off decent vibs when talking to him about the condition. As for price, not sure but I'd pay $200 no problem for something decent.

The shipping price is not out of line. Depends on where you live.. If you are close enough to drive? I would go for it, it's worth the gamble.. I got a spare 850 motor for < $20 + $20 in gas

Yes I am close enough to drive. Between 2-3 hours. I must have a closer look and perhaps try to steal one like you did for < $20. Nice catch.
