    Fork swap for 1980 GSX 750

    Anyone point me in the right direction for swapping out my puny 1980 front end for some USD forks for my GSX? Would really like to know what is involved and what models will fit. I heard that GSXR1000 forks from 2000 or so are the go but would really like a definite answer before I decend on fleabay to grab some.

    Any of the GSXR forks will fit i.e. bolt on to the frame (some require a bearing swap) but don't expect anything else to be easy. You need to sort out the length (USD are much shorter) with a stepped top triple, the steerer stops, ignition mount, gauge mount etc.

      Incorrect mate
      later model 1000 etc forks require a lot more work than that, direct bolt on usd's are from the 90's late model oil cooled bikes & the early 90's water cooled bikes
      here's my old gsx750 with wp forks mid rebuild to give you an idea of how they look fitted

          93 gsxr 750 wp ....direct bolt on ...no bearing changes or anything ...even lock stops are identical

            My bad... sorry I guess I was thinking of 80GS1000's bike. I know he used 2004 forks or thereabouts.

              Dan,
              I think on the later model GSXR forks they have to press out the steering stem from the lower triple and use one of the earlier ones.

                I have a similar issue. I plan to use a Hayabusa front end on a 78 GS 1000. The GS uses a 30 x 55 x17 bottom bearing and a 25 x 47 x 15 top bearing (stepped stem). The Hayabusa and GSXR1000 use a 30 x 55 x 17 bearing on both the top and bottom. A standard 6303 bearing(comes in various configurations), available at any NAPA store has a width of 14mm, an OD of 47mm and an ID of 17mm. could this be used with a spacer to make up the difference in width from 14mm to 25mm.Thought of stacking 2, but thought the Busa and probably the GSXR100 stems were shorter.

                  Just though, Do I have the width, OD and ID number on the bearings mixed up. on the 30 x 55 x 17 is the 30 the width, 55 the OD and 17 the ID or is the 30 the ID, 55 OD and 17 the width. Thanks for clarifying

                    U might want to see 80GS1000's links to his modified bike. He posted a vendor that had a kit as I recall.

                      If you want to run the 97+ GSXR trees you need this upper bearing from Twin works


                      It's a custom 47mm OD 30mm ID made for fork swaps on SV650's

                      The stock GSXR lower bearing will fit. as is.

                      No stem pressing and swapping necessary
