Chain Conversion 530 or 520?

I've been looking at different chain setups an I was wondering if there was any reason to not run a 520 chain on my GS1000 instead of a 530..

I guess main reason is I can get a good RK 520 X-ring chain for $20-50 less than the same 530 chain and it's a bit lighter.. sprockets cost the same..

It'll take a JT Sprockets JTF512 front and a JTR1825 rear sprocket.

I don't need it for any other reason.. I'm still running stock wheels.

All things being equal, a 530 chain will generally last longer and stretch less than a 520 chain on a street bike. Something to consider. http://www.z1enterprises.com/catalog.aspx?pid=SPMP2 for good prices on some RK x-ring chains.

The rollers are wider on 530 so the sprockets and chain wear will be less. I get using 520 because it's narrow, some guys running a wide wheel/tire don't have much of a choice, but otherwise I'd go with 530.

also depends on if you're making upwards of 100hp or more... on the 1k.. i don't think you're making enough to break a 520, but you will definitely stretch it well before the 530 would. so you will end up spending more replacing chains in the long run than if you just bought 530s. I doubt you'd notice it with fuel mileage either. you'd also have to get new sprockets too.

I'm not convinced a 520 stretches more than a 530. I've been running a 520 Regina chain the last few years with Vortex sprockets and it's been the best wearing combo I've ever had on the bike.

you can get 530 chains far stronger than your stock 630.

ek makes a 520 with 9400 lbs tensile. I will be running that chain on my 1260 turbo katana I am building.

I run a DID 520 with a Supersprox on my FZ1, it has almost 5000 miles on it with no stretching what so ever. I have to agree with Billy I am not convinced the 520 stretches any more than the 530. The argument has always been that a 520 is designed is for racing. I dont think the average guy could put racing stress on a chain. IMO I think it comes down to personal preference.

i agree on some things but i dont agree regina is weak, there solid pin chains are expencive but strong!
520 are used on dirt bike and are very strong, i dont know where you would get a 520 from though, except from those guys ,, and as for oiling a chain i dont agreee with there right way
to do it right you would need to take the chain off and oil it, then you wouldnt get any on your tire
i think o rings are just money for nothing,re oil an chain and the o rings will keep the oil from getting where it needs to be, and there heavier not stronger than other chains
to each his own though
