Feeler Gauge - 0.2-0.3mm????
Anyone know where to get a feeler gauge that goes down to .02 mm 0r .03 mm. The valve clearences for a '81 gs 450T are between .03-.08mm. Thanks for looking. -
davel
0.03mm = 0.001"
0.08mm = 0.003"
Those will come in a standard set of feeler gauges. Any auto parts store should stock them

If that's not right, they are listed by model. Get more than one gauge. When they are right they just fall in. They don't feel like any gauge you have ever used. I guarantee you will break at least one trying to get the feel of a normal gauge. http://www.z1enterprises.com/http://www.thegsresources.com/_forum...ine=1440711157'78 GS1000E, Dyna-S ignition, Dyna Green Coils, K&N pods, Delkevic SS 4-1 exhaust, Dynojet Stage 3 jet kit, Russell SS Brake Lines, Progressive suspension, Compu-Fire series Regulator 55402 and Advmonster cree LED headlight conversion.

Snap-On has an inexpensive set of feeler gauges, about $10 with S&H.
I have a set of Harbor Freight feeler gauges that are incorrect. Wasted nearly an hour switching out shims before I miked my new feelers and found the problem.sigpic[Tom]

I just ordered a metric set that goes to .02mm - 1mm. $9.49 free shipping. Coming from Hong Kong so it's gonna be 5-12 days.

Most motorcycle shoppes have a display of "Bikemaster" brand tools. They sell a nifty set that goes to .03mm.
It's well worth having a set marked in mm instead of inches, simply because it reduces confusion.
.03mm is nearly as thin as foil, so if that doesn't go in, you're changing the shim anyway. You don't really need anything smaller than .04mm.1983 GS850G, Cosmos Blue.

I picked up a set at NAPA, they go down to 0.04mm, which is very, very thin. About $12.
Much better than my American gauges, which only estimate their metric equivalent.

I use SAE feeler gauges. Snap-on quality for $6.20 and they go down to .025mm. http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item....re&dir=catalog
If you can't figure out the math you shouldn't be wrenching.Ed

From my gauges:
SAE
0.002" - .051mm
0.003" - .076mm
0.004" - 0.102mm
Metric
0.04 mm - 0.04mm
0.05mm - 0.05mm
0.06mm - 0.06mm
I wonder which is more accurate?
I also use a metric wrench even if a SAE one fits almost the same. My TransAm is one of those dual-duty vehicles that uses both, so I have to measure twice, wrench once.
Do what you want, it is your bike(s).

The only metric and SAE wrenches that interchange within common sizes is 9/16" and 14mm. Nothing else is close in my experience.Ed
