4-1 fitting question - 650 vs 550

i picked up a used 4-1 kerker saturday morning from the local used parts lot... they seem to think that it was on a GS550, but will fit the GS650E i have no problem.. i had it on for a minute (broken exhaust bolts off in the head, see other post) and it seemed to fit perfect, although a little close against the oil pan.. is this bad? seems that would aid in overheating the bike. which is not something im interested in having happen.

i guess i basically need to know if it IS in fact from a 550, will that fit my 650 (i think the dimensions between the 2 bikes are the same, right?) and if anyone has any close up pics of their 4-1 on their 650, please pot 'em so i know how close it rides to the oil pan.

I don't have the dimensions, but I'm of the opinion that as long as parts are not rubbing you are ok. I would use it if it fits.

I'm using an exhaust that was meant for an air/oil cooled GSX-R. It fits tight up under the oil pan. That actually helped with ground clearance and hasn't been a problem heatwise. The only time the sump will see more heat is at a dead stop. Since heat rises I doubt it matters much if you have 2" or 1/4" of clearance.

well, the thing that scares me is more the fitting of the headers into the head. the spacing is correct, but the space between the ring that bolts on to the head and the end of the header is a little longer on the 550? does that make sense... here, check this out -



the spacing between A & B is deeper on the 550 header than the 650 header.. still enough room (semingly) to hold the header to the head, but just doesnt seem to fit as snug. this also worries me. weird. maybe i should just sell it and try to find one for a 650. Suzuki lists the 550 and the 650 headers as different part numbers.

It's not unusual for Suzuki to list different part numbers for the exact same part between models and years. There are parts that my bike shares with '83 and up 750s that are listed with different part numbers. As long as the diameter at the port is the same don't worry about it.

Wait a second - if the distance between A and B is shorter on your new pipe, you might want to think seriously about going with shorter bolts. It may feel that it's not as snug because you're bottoming the stock bolts out - compare the pipe measurements, subtract the difference from your stock bolt length, buy shorter bolts to match the new pipes. Better out a few bucks for bolts, than out a lot of dough for cracking your head....
