Airbox inspection...

Wrenchin' newbie questions: I weather stripped the end caps on my airbox after reading that suggestion here -- glad I looked, because the old seals were basically gone -- and a couple of questions arose. One, looks like there was a diagonal strip in addition to the one around the circumference. Do I need to do that too?

Also, would weatherstipping be better than the present seal on the top of the filter? Seems in good shape.


Third, is the filter supposed to lock into place when you put it back? I couldn't find a locked-in position really, and I'm wondering if I should keep trying.

Yes, yes and yes.

On the '79 850's the filter slides into place from the left side of the box and is held in place by a 6mm bolt. A good sealing strip is important.I believe the later CV carbed models do the same.

Thanks 49er for the response...I took another look at the rig and my filter (which slides in from the right side) has a metal tab that you press down to free up the filter so you can pull it out.

What I didn't notice was the opening in the top of that tab, which you have to work up onto a little catch. Then it locks in finestkind.
