    Oil pressure gauge

I am looking to mount a oil pressure gauge on my 81 GS1100 engine.

I saw one at the bike show this weekend that mounted in a nice convenient place but it was on a Kaw. I know they are pretty close to the same as far as general design but I have never seen one mounted on a GS like this before.
I am not so concerned about dead on accuracy but just to monitor that I do indeed have oil pressure since all of my warning lights and factory items are being removed.

Here is a pic of the Kaw, not the best pic but you can see where the gauge is and where it comes off of.

Here is a better pic of the bolt I am referring to on the Gs

Looking at the oil diagram in the manual it seems like a logical place, any thoughts or opinions????

If you sell parts or provide services for GS series motorcycles, place a description of it in this forum.

most times going to "Advanced search" will pull up stuff you never imagined.

Well I will be a son of a gun......I am a avid user of the search, guess I wasnt using the right key words.
          Thanks for the help.

No disrespect intended to Bruce and the product he provides, but to me those pressure gauges are useless. The GS oiling system uses an ultra reliable direct drive oil pump system and there is greater risk of damaging the gauge and causing a leak then the bike loosing oil pressure due to some internal problem.

I am doing allot of modification to my bike/engine I just want a way to verify that there is indeed oil flow. I agree the internal oiling system is very reliable.....I just want to know for sure there is still pressure. Piece of mind I guess.

Okay, I understand what you are doing. I have one of these gages and use it after each engine build. Once I verify the oil pressure is where it should be, the gauge comes off and the plug goes back in the engine.

VDO gauges cost $20 each. Drill and tap an old oil galley plug with 1/8 NTP threads. Use a brass elbow commonly available for a couple bucks each and you have your gauge system.

One problem is when the sump runs dry and oil pressure drops like a rock

Happens with GS750 gears all the time

Personally I mounted my oil gauge on the handle bars. Looking between your legs at oil pressure is bad enough, but the 1 1/2" gauges are not lited and you can't see anything at night.

For the 1 1/2" gauges, you can run a cheap piece of clear tubing up the spine of the bike and come up into the steering stem where the gauge can mount right in the steering stem nut.

I spent more money and had a 48" stainless line made to go from my oil sensor cover to a handle bar mounted lighted 2 1/8" VDO gauge.
Right side lower gauge; voltage is lower left.

Thats a nice set up. I see you point as far as visibility but I am keeping handler bars clean no switches or anything, the only gauge I am putting up top is a small boost gauge

What is normal oil pressure for a roller bearing crank with standard gears on the oil pump? With 750 gears?

                          IIRC at about 4-5K rpm

                          Stock:
                          3 psi hot/ 6 psi cold

                          750 gears:
                          6 psi hot/12 psi cold
It will peg a 15 psi gauge at high RPM and drain the sump.

Why run 750 gears then? Sounds like a serious problem.

If you don't know about it is ; If you reverse the sump pickup tube the problem can be averted.
